@Solving_Inv It’s not about risk, it’s about reducing trading costs by capturing some of the short term alpha by exploiting the fact that not trading yet is free (assuming you plan on trading anyways eventually) similar idea to trading faster (it’s less cost than trading from scratch)

@quant_arb any logic where you might warehouse more risk than the TWAP would suggest bc of <1min/5/15 alphas?

@Solving_Inv For how I set up my system: 1/5/15min forward return target alpha control the speed of the TWAP (usually around 1h TWAP) Haven’t added sub 1 min alphas to market make around yet but I’ve built them before when I ran HFT strategies on perpetuals so it’s on the TODO

@ZVZZT_ Yes obviously but that’s not so hard to do, not a ton of secret IP there nowadays. Maybe some edge in making into things well (although even then a lot of that is short term alphas just v short term) too

@PrazRama I thought he was super friendly and probably intelligent by any IQ measures but he spoke about QR like an intern with basically the same ideas

I met Stoikov on call once and thought he was a complete retard. Don’t believe in academics too much

@investingidiocy the first part is true, the second part is underselling yourself - bald egghead billionaires are all the rage lately.

@mean_field_zane What so optimal market making theory like what Avellaneda and Stoikov kicked off is for policy making on market making 😂😂 come on!

@quant_arb No, academic work is not supposed to be practical. The goals of academic finance are almost always not for industry practice and are instead to inform policy making and industry self-understanding on a collective level.

@mean_field_zane The purpose of academic work is practical in the end, it shouldn’t just be to impress other academics. If an academic has no idea how to actually make money trading then they’ll probably just produce papers that impress other academics and not practitioners.. this is what I argued

@quant_arb Ok? He’s not an academic then… considering he wasn’t working in an academic context!!!! Says very little about the work that academics do…

@mean_field_zane He’s now a very sharp dev at a great shop but it goes to show that some lessons have to be learned in the field genius or not

@mean_field_zane Smartest guy I know still tried to over optimise our trading algorithm to the ns when it was an MVP. Raw intellect- the guy is insane but at that time because he’d only worked in academic contexts he made the mistakes we all make. IQ doesn’t save you from lack of industry exp.

@mean_field_zane Sure but what a strange thing to bring up out of nowhere. And why specifically me if this applies to almost anyone

@systematicls VPIN (so I have heard from other PMs) is useful and I’ve found frac diff useful for features. Not sure much else from the guy I like

@Phoenix_FFM He sometimes writes good stuff but a ton of his stuff is like mind bogglingly terrible, the kind of neural network quantum computing microwave brain drivel you’d expect from someone who has never worked in quant professionally

@quant_arb I've heard about that opinion before. Why don't his peers take him seriously in your opinion? I get that scientific credentials are often ignored by practioners but the size he managed and the risk adjusted seem to be impressive so what's the issue?

Decent advice for backtesting and research hygiene at the start. Otherwise it’s a lot of fluff
