99.9% of people who "experienced" the Challenger disaster saw it on replay and now remember it as live.
Almost NO ONE was watching. Everyone thinks they were. It's a fascinating collective false memory.

Anyone who experienced the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion, like I did, is probably a bit hesitant to get too excited about the Artemis II launch today. I truly hope our children don’t have to experience such tragedy. May the Universe welcome them and return them safely home 🙏

@DJSnM @AudreyPorne But what's "much slower"? My current and prior kettle (different brands) both boil a full kettle in ~100 seconds, and a cup or two's worth (the more frequent need) in about 35. Why the angst? Still far faster than using a stove kettle or a microwave

@ESRogs @MinuteofZombie Suspect they're usually meaning it to be impractical rather than impossible - to travel like we envision airline travel, say, would require travel times only FTL could provide. Need an age of exploration by sail POV not a Lufthansa POV

I'm assuming the FTL people are thinking life is more rare than that. So that aliens wouldn't be in those nearby star systems.
Otherwise, why would they say FTL was needed?

“The universe is too big, intelligent life can’t get to us (without FTL)” is one of those idiotic truisms perpetuated by endless Carl Sagan and Neil Degrasse Tyson specials.
This is a common misconception based on ridiculous statements about Voyager.
Voyager is traveling absurdly slow. If we were interested in sending a vehicle to Alpha Centauri inside of 1 human lifetime, entirely using nuclear and chemical reactional propulsion, we could. You can get to .2 or .3c with a large enough fission/fusion/rocket, which are entirely known regimes of physics.
It would be a monumental engineering undertaking but not unlike the Hoover Dam or Apollo.
We just aren’t that motivated.
This is if we were compelled to send frail, living humans.
If we sent AI the time problem disappears entirely.
John Von Neumann figured this out like literally 100 years ago.

@UziCryptoo One of my bosses (in US) who did this overseas in EU in late 90s. Between property management and mortgage, it was a slight (~$50-100) loss every month, even if he didn't pay extra towards mortgage, but he paid off the mortgage in less than 15 years, and then it was a cash cow
