Very annoyed by the sudden wave of anti-poly tweets/articles I've seen recently Seems like it's being pushed by the usual Baptists + Bootleggers coalition of conservative Christians & radfems (the same alliance pushing anti-trans, anti-porn, & anti-sex-work views)
tedks@_tedks

My mentor from BigTech is poly. She has a husband and a boyfriend. They all lived together at their house in Mountain View until moving to SF with their kids a few years ago. I get their holiday cards every year. I think of them every time a wave of poly hate hits the timeline.

@janvbear @Wisteraverse "address it somehow in your story" and the story is set in a fictional historical fantasy world that has nothing to do with post-MADD (1984) US drinking laws

If your audience is German, then an American’s opinion on that has no value. If your audience is American, then you’ve been warned that other people will have that question, and you can address it somehow in your story. But I don’t see the point of asking someone for an opinion and then getting huffy because they don’t give you the opinion you want. You can ignore what doesn’t work. And if the beta reader isn’t helpful, get someone else. But if I’m reading to critique, and I’m constantly saying to myself, “Oh that comment doesn’t matter,” I will stop offering comments. You’ll get a clear copy of your manuscript (congratulations), but you won’t get the most of what I could offer to improve it.

Dr. Shida Ketzer (follows back fiction writers)
An American beta-reader criticized my 18-year-old character drinking beer because they assumed it should not be allowed, despite it being high fantasy set in a fictional & historical world. Also drinking age (beer, wine) in Germany is 16. Not every place is the US!🤦‍♀️
Ruby is editing 🦊🌙 🇨🇦@RubyMTemple

So apparently there’s a lot of knowledge I can use from being Canadian and setting my story in Alberta Canada that is gonna make me seem legit. For example, the drinking age here is 18, my FMC is 19 and is surprised that she can drink at the bar (my FMC is American)

@EPM106 its a second order thing from the general failure of education to be up to the task of creating a human being who could learn it for themselves without instruction. In that failing the focus of education in retreat becomes its what it teachs where the then gaps become an issue

in a weird spot with this because on the one hand i think it’s indicative of a larger issue in education but in a vacuum it’s not a big deal if analogue clocks fall completely out of fashion
Karabo Ntshweng@KaraboNtshweng

Schools are removing analogue clocks and replacing them with digital ones because learners can’t tell the time. Met a 21-year-old recently, asked him the time… he couldn’t answer. I’ve seen it first hand 😭

@istewart1919 @anup_malani the bullshit theory that "addiction is a disease that overrides choice" is not taken seriously by basically any addiction expert outside of the US. it's bullshit based on protestant religious beliefs and the ideas of a 1960s cult leader

@anup_malani And Becker's theory is not taken seriously by actual experts in addiction science. It's a better example of ridiculous rational actor assumptions and economists overstepping their field than it is a useful framework for understanding addiction.

Why do smokers keep smoking when they know it might kill them? The standard answer: addiction is a disease that overrides choice. My advisor Gary Becker and my friend Kevin Murphy argued the opposite. Addicts are rational.

Sometimes people ask about a scar on my arms and I'll just say, "cigarette burn" so I imagine they think it's the standard self harm scenario - but the truth is once a guy jokingly threatened to burn me with his cigarette on the back porch of a bar so I rolled up my sleeve and held out my arm and said, "Do it, then." I stared at him while he pressed the cigarette into my skin and waited for me to scream. Of course it hurt like hell, but I wasn't going to give him the satisfaction.

@BDSixsmith @CathyYoung63 Back when marrying for love be an a thing, gay marriage became a hot topic, etc., lots of people criticized anything different and rationalized away why anyone would talk about it. Judging people’s relationship structures and romantic choices has a long history, and never works.

@cocoalosoxo I think SJP and those writers hated Carrie. Like all of her love interests sucked in the show and in the recent reboot. The politician was my favorite until they gave him that strange fetish.

Three Charged with Conspiring to Unlawfully Divert Cutting Edge U.S. Artificial Intelligence Technology to China “The indictment unsealed today details alleged efforts to evade U.S. export laws through false documents, staged dummy servers to mislead inspectors, and convoluted transshipment schemes, in order to obfuscate the true destination of restricted AI technology—China,” said John A. Eisenberg, Assistant Attorney General for National Security. “These chips are the product of American ingenuity, and NSD will continue to enforce our export-control laws to protect that advantage.” 🔗: justice.gov/opa/pr/three-c…

They want to have sex with the Dinergoths. It's libidinal. The whole thing. They want to have sex with the barristas of the cafes they work at in NYC and this decidedly sadder, more middle American version of those baristas is also someone they want to have sex with.
A. Bartaway🇺🇦❤️✊✌️@Bartaway

The “Dinergoth” article is a part of the bottomless genre of “I felt slighted by a particular person but I’m going to act like I’m mad at them for a profound think piece reason instead of how I’m just a goober”

My contribution to diner goth is that there is a similar flat "monoculture" of empty signs and vacuous consumption within upper middle class cosmpolitan gen Zs that is equally as worthless/devoid of substance/aesthetically barren. Exemplified by aritzia

On the topic of sex worker rights: one time a guy tried to kidnap (and prob murder) me cause I was a sex worker. They gave him a plea deal for only 5 years (!!!). He accepted. And then when it came to final sentencing the judge was like 'actually let's just give him 18 months'.
