A little science behind how ENSO (El Nino and La Niña) works. The prevailing pattern in the Equatorial Pacific is typically Trade Winds blowing from east to west. That pushes warm surface water towards the West Pacific “warm pool” where, believe it or not, the sea level is literally ~1.5 feet higher due to warm water piling up! Anyway… during a transition to El Niño the trades weaken. In the case of right now there’s twin cyclones, north & south of the Equator in the W Pacific, spinning in opposite directions, who’s combined circulation is causing a regional reversal of the trades… a westerly wind burst. That’s acting as a jolt to the system, helping to slow the trade winds, and kick start El Niño as that west to east wind forces warm water back eastward into the central-east Equatorial Pacific. And that is what defines El Niño, a warming of the surface waters in the East-Central Pacific. The warm mound of water is sloshing back eastward! Isn’t #science cool?! Or in this case hot? :) Now there’s a whole lot more to this process, but this provides a good foundation.
