🎙️ On this week's episode of Tank Talks, I sit down with @rbellini, Co-Founder of BSQUARED Capital and former CEO of @BellusHealth for a powerful conversation about family, legacy, and resilience in biotech.
We originally recorded this episode just two weeks before the sudden passing of his father, Dr. Francesco Bellini — known as “Mr. Biotech Canada.” After his passing, Roberto and I decided to re-record the episode as a heartfelt tribute to his father’s incredible impact on the Canadian biotech industry. This is the first time Roberto speaks publicly since his father's passing and opens up about:
- Growing up with a front-row seat to the rise of Biochem Pharma and its $6B exit.
- The highs and lows of leading Bellus Health, from near collapse to a $2B acquisition by GSK.
- How BSQUARED Capital is helping shape the next generation of biotech innovators in Canada.
- Lessons on leadership, perseverance, and the true meaning of legacy.
This episode goes beyond business success — it’s about honouring a visionary, learning through adversity, and building something that lasts.

@BiotechCat @RobertLKruse @AppleHelix Sensory receptors disorders (pain, cough) can be tough trials to run. I still believe that Suze is active and better trial design/patient selection will help. Also, better getting this reality check in Ph 2 vs failing Ph 3.

@RobertLKruse @AppleHelix Not exactly the same thing but Bellus' run-in period fixed their placebo issue @rbellini

I know we have quite a few biostatisticians on Biotwitter. If you see this Ph 2, and was asked to determine the powering for a Ph 3, what do you do?

Being a Biotech CEO is a Tough Job Example #273
The Everything is Awesome CEO exists and fails to connect with investors for all the reasons that Josh Schimmer(@biotech1) lists in his Weekend Musing (below) but even the best CEOs struggle with communicating business challenges.🧵

@BuysideBiotech @Biohazard3737 Let's just say we would have preferred not to have to dig down into the baseline characteristics but glad we did.

@Biohazard3737 @rbellini might agree otherwise. $AVTE reminds me of Bellus

I have to say, I really enjoy the hockey commentary from @michael_gilman @echo_nyc @rbellini
These guys know their stuff!
English

@Sanctuary_Bio @echo_nyc @michael_gilman Forget about this year. Derek or Mike win practically every year. I don't know what I have to do to crack the top 2.
English

@echo_nyc @michael_gilman @rbellini ill be honest i will always kind of skeptical that hockey knowledge had a very high correlation with fantasy pool performance, but you guys are in the top3 this year so...
