Five Stanford University students go on trial this week on felony charges tied to a June 2024 pro-Palestinian protest, making it the harshest criminal case to emerge from last year’s nationwide campus demonstrations against Israel’s genocide in Gaza, The Guardian reports. The students are accused of felony conspiracy to trespass and felony vandalism after occupying the university president’s office for one hour to demand divestment from Israel. Five of the twelve defendants pleaded not guilty and are proceeding to trial. They were immediately suspended and banned from campus, then later reinstated after internal discipline. Nearly a year later, amid Trump administration pressure on elite universities, Santa Clara County DA Jeff Rosen has filed criminal charges. If convicted, the students face over three years in prison and massive restitution demands. Stanford is seeking more than $300,000, though its own facilities director testified the actual damage was under $10,000. The defendants say the prosecution is politically motivated and designed to deter future protests.
