I'm extremely fortunate to have Bruce, who was the Principal Engineer for Paul Allen's Living Computer Museum, come out and fix the PDP-11 issues I can't solve! Which is to say, "anything that requires actual engineering talent!". He led the multi-year restoration of the huge CDC6500 from Purdue... with more than 10,000 pins to be recabled. He had to reverse engineer and remanufacture logic and memory modules, the refrigeration system, and used FPGAs to emulate missing hardware. He's also restored (perhaps a few) PDP-10 systems, including the big KI10/KA10. And he invented a bunch of BMS stuff for EVs, worked at Intel and Cisco, and so on! Fortunately, he's one of the comparatively few engineers I know who's passionate about keeping OLD hardware running as it was intended AND who knows how to do it! But now we're starting to dress alike, it seems!

La clave de Silicon Valley es que tiene 2 universidades de primer nivel en la zona (y otras de menor categoría): Stanford y UC Berkeley.

Why the Superhet is Still the King of Radio Design What is one of the main techniques used to enable your car radio or walkie-talkie to pick out one specific station from a sea of noise? The answer lies in a century-old invention: the Superheterodyne Receiver. Invented in 1918 to solve the "selectivity" problem, the superhet principle remains the foundation for almost all broadcast radios, televisions, and satellite communications today. How does it work? Instead of trying to amplify a signal at its original high frequency (which is technically difficult and unstable), the superhet "mixes" the incoming signal with a locally generated frequency. This converts the signal to a fixed, lower frequency called the Intermediate Frequency (IF). The 3 Game-Changing Advantages: 1️⃣ Superior Selectivity: By using a fixed IF, engineers can use high-performance filters to "carve out" the exact channel they want, rejecting all unwanted interference. 2️⃣ High Sensitivity: Processing signals at lower frequencies allows for much higher gain and clearer reception of weak signals. 3️⃣ Multi-Mode Versatility: Whether it’s AM, FM, or SSB, adding a new modulation type is as simple as adding a different demodulator at the end of the IF chain. While Software Defined Radios (SDR) are changing the landscape, the fundamental RF design techniques of the superhet are still as relevant as ever for any electronics engineer or radio enthusiast.
