America please come get your homeless out of my state!!! Reporters spent two days on the streets of Hollywood, Venice, and Skid Row asking more than 200 homeless people one simple question: where are you from? 64 percent said they were from outside the City of Los Angeles. 53 percent said they were from outside Los Angeles County. Nearly 40 percent said they came from another state.

When I exited the center, my staff told me that there’s been a major escalation. I saw a large line of ICE agents staring down a line of protestors. I walked in the space between asking for the head of the ICE contingent. They told me they needed to secure access to the driveway. I told them their tactics are only making matters worse. (5/13)

My heart broke to see Americans fighting Americans in our streets yesterday. As I saw ICE agents tackling civilians and firing pepper balls into the crowd, I was overwhelmed by how broken we’ve become. We cannot normalize this violence. Here’s what happened at Delaney Hall: THREAD

While everyone argues about data centers and water, California almonds quietly use up to 80x more, AND the whole industry only survives because of trucked-in "livestock"... Every February, beekeepers transport nearly every commercial honeybee colony in the United States (around 2.8 million hives) to California to pollinate almonds. It's the largest "managed-pollination" event on the planet. Almonds cover 1.4 million acres and need bees to pollinate so they set nuts. So why do we need to truck them in? Well, almonds are grown in huge monoculture orchards, meaning the native bee species are all but eradicated...there's nothing for them to eat most of the year. To fix the problem WE created, we ship in bees from across the country. I interviewed the creator of the 2019 documentary The Pollinators, which followed this migration and brought a lot of this story into public view. First off, honeybees aren't native to North America. They were brought from Europe in the 1600s. The "bee crisis" you read about, with national colony losses around 55% last year and some commercial keepers losing 60 to 70% in a single season, is happening to a managed, introduced species. It's a livestock collapse driven by long-haul transport, pesticide exposure at bloom, hives packed together spreading mites and viruses, and a monoculture diet. Meanwhile, North America has roughly 4,000 native bee species. Most are solitary, don't make honey, don't sting, and quietly pollinate everything from squash to blueberries. Research out of UC Davis and UC Berkeley has been direct about this: when blue orchard bees, bumble bees, and other natives forage alongside honeybees in almond orchards, fruit set goes UP, not down. The presence of wild bees changes how honeybees move through the trees and makes the honeybees themselves more effective pollinators. So the fix isn't more honeybee hives. It's hedgerows, wildflower strips, bare ground for ground-nesting bees, and uncut field edges, aka habitat for the natives who were doing this work long before we started trucking in livestock. Honeybees are livestock. Native bees are the wildlife, and we should be planting to include them in our agriculture.

University of California STEM professors want standardized tests back due to severe math deficiencies among students: “We now observe preparation gaps so severe that instructors must reteach middle school mathematics” “The current admissions metric, based primarily on GPA & essays, can no longer reliably distinguish readiness for university-level STEM majors in an era of severe grade inflation & AI assisted application essays”

I’m not saying we don’t have problems in LA but idk if people selling tchotchkes on a tourist hub street is one of them? This isn’t a tent city this is people trying to sell bits and bobs along the walk of fame I think that’s just what tourist traps do…

As a Democrat, I can admit I’ve been voting wrong. Look what Mayor Karen Bass has allowed to happen to Hollywood Boulevard. It’s not only disgusting, it’s an embarrassment. It’s much worse than the picture depicts.

"As temperatures rise, shade should be recognized as essential infrastructure, something that should be treated similarly to power lines or sewers" In SF, anyone can appeal a new housing development just because it will cast a shadow as part of an environmental appeal. The irony of this is that in a warming world, shade should be considered an amenity, not a nuisance. In fact, the neighborhoods that are historically redlined are those with the highest land surface temperatures. So when NIMBYs block housing, they are not just hurting the ability of San Franciscans to continue to live here (over 2000 units of housing have been delayed or blocked in SF over the last 10 years, due to "shade") - they are directly harming climate mitigation efforts as well. It's time for our housing development to adapt to our changing climate. That's why I've introduced the SHADE Act - which will eliminate the ability for NIMBYs to use shade as an argument for blocking housing in San Francisco. Because it's time to admit, that shade is good. Thank you Allison Arieff for the thoughtful op-ed in today's @sfchronicle @sfc_opinions sfchronicle.com/opinion/articl…

San Francisco should be one of the greatest cities on Earth. Instead: – We became the nation’s NIMBY capital and refused to build housing. Now housing costs are among the worst in America (again). Local leadership squarely owns this failure. … I’m not done ⬇️

So let’s get something straight about the unhoused: California is expected to carry a massive share of America’s homelessness crisis, then gets mocked for struggling under the weight of a problem that clearly extends far beyond Los Angeles. 📌 According to this report, only 36% of L.A.’s street homeless population is originally from the City of Los Angeles itself. Another 38% came from other states. Meanwhile, politicians across the country slash housing, healthcare, and mental health funding, then point at California and scream “failed blue city.” This is not just an LA problem. It’s a national crisis.

Why has modular construction failed in the United States? "Sweden has used prefabrication to deliver mid- and high-rise housing at competitive cost and high quality for decades, and the explanation has nothing to do with engineering. Sweden has a standardized national building code and, more consequentially, a Public Housing authority that has committed to enough repeat volume to give factories a reason to invest, improve, and stay in business." "In our experience, the building code is as much to blame as land use policy. The U.S. has delegated code development to more than 20,000 local jurisdictions, each with its own byzantine requirements, making it nearly impossible to develop a standard product that can be sold at scale across state lines."

Trying to pick pocket in our city? @SFPD will catch you.  Earlier this week, SFPD arrested three individuals who were targeting Chinatown residents. After speaking directly with merchants and hearing their concerns, SFPD officers deployed drones and plainclothes teams to area. They tracked and arrested the suspects, who had come from out of town to commit crimes in our city. Thank you to SFPD for listening to this community and getting results.

The Senate just passed my bill to ensure people can replace drafty windows with energy-efficient windows, without cities or HOAs obstructing them from doing so. Energy bills are through the roof & people should have the tools to lower their bills. Right now, some cities & HOAs are banning people from weatherizing their windows for aesthetic reasons, or forcing them to pay dramatically more money to fabricate replica windows. SB 908 puts a stop to this practice & gives people a tool to lower their cost of living. Thank you, colleagues!

If the road is not crowded and you’re in the left lane and you’re not bothering somebody, I don’t see that much of a problem with it except in the states where it is illegal to drive in the left lane at any time, which the software should Geo fence around. Places like Washington state and New Jersey. You cannot be in the left lane driving. However, in other states it just needs to move over and let the car pass. If it’s coming up behind you in the past it was always very good at knowing that a car is coming up quickly on you and it would move over to let them through in any mode.

Still unfortunately seeing left lane camping in standard mode on FSD V14.3.3. I’m on a 70mph highway, capped at 75mph in standard mode. As you can see, I’ve got a BMW on my ass, clearly wanting to pass me. FSD has plenty of space to get over to the right lane, but it is refusing to move. I let it go until the stress of being an asshole became too much. Bumped it into hurry mode to resolve. Interesting to me why this is so hard to fix, especially since it really wasn’t a problem on some earlier versions of FSD.

Can you initiate a lane change by turning on your turn signal in V14? That’s what I do when someone comes up from behind me wanting to pass in HW3 V12.6.4. Adding human input helps train the models to be better in these situations so don’t just wait to leave it to the Tesla team to fix, you’re training the fleet too.
