@TxusaBarbs @jarvis_best My god, it was worse than we thought! This is what the “investigation” should focus on.
English

@SarahTheHaider I don’t disagree, but in the case of a realtime event, such as the Iran affair, one is compelled to sort available “news,” right? Of course it’s still useful to read about the region in journals and books to gain a better understanding of the environment.
English

Yes, I think on the whole it is wise to aim towards slower developing information. The slower the better, so breaking news < magazine features < books. The faster moving it is, the more likely it is *worse than nothing*, actively hampering your efforts to be knowledgable. I hardly do any news at all, as in my judgement it is far too noisy to be worth the effort.
A separate element should be proximity: the closer to home (and able to withstand the verification/corroboration of your own eyes), the better. This latter element has some important caveats, though!
I mainly consume books for knowledge-building purposes.

@SarahTheHaider @thomaschattwill @Musa_alGharbi I'm trying to take the middle road by only reading news rather than watching/listening. It tends to act like a moving average. It's not a knee jerk reaction. More facts emerge a week after an event. If a journo takes time 2 write about something a week later, it's not just a blip
English

@actiontalker @SarahTheHaider @AlexNowrasteh I think you misunderstood. I’m fairly certain that when she said engage with reality on gender she didn’t mean adopt leftwing beliefs about gender. In fact, I think she was saying the opposite, that gender is one of the issues the left has lost its way on.
English

@SarahTheHaider @AlexNowrasteh You’ll turn left about gender? There is only 2! It’s biology not make believe! You have lost all respect

"Would you consider yourself a Trump supporter or just that he is lesser evil?"
I don't really think in those terms. I didn't really vote against Kamala, either.
Broadly (and boringly), my shift from green to yellow is more at the party/issues level: I simply think GOP is more correct on more issues of importance to me, and moreover I think the conservative intuition tends to be more directionally true than the progressive one (particularly on issues like crime/poverty/education, even defense).
I am/was also very alarmed by the ability of center-left types (who I otherwise find smart and interesting) to delude themselves so completely about Biden's mental status. It points to a deeply broken filter which I find frightening, and no amount of excellent human capital or good intentions can make up for it.
In various ways I see the left's problem as stemming from fatally flawed epistemology. I would very broadly categorize the GOP as living in the world of "is", while progressives live in the world of "oughts", and while I agree with many progressive "oughts", I think their denial of uncomfortable realities makes achieving them unlikely or even counterproductive.
Trump and Kamala didn't really play huge roles in my thinking. If they switched places and everything remained the same, I would still have done as I did.

@WilliamShatner Bill, it was a pleasure to watch you play Capt. Kirk over the years (I watched from age 3). I wish you a long and happy life.
English

@LaurenMcWoof @sival84 @SarahTheHaider The worst government intrusion I can imagine, in fact. And now it lies with the states, and my wife, daughter, and I live in Texas. At least a few states voted for the age of viability over total or near-total abortion bans, important improvements in those states.
English

@sival84 @SarahTheHaider Republicans want a federal abortion ban. How is that leaving us alone?
English

I do feel sadness for my Dem friends and family, though.
We all live in our own universes...I wish they could live in mine, and see what I see. Something interesting is happening. It is not what you have seen before, and it is not all bad--in some ways it is very good.
Sarah Haider 👾@SarahTheHaider
I’m feeling a sense of calm and optimism.

@Stasiahoney @HoustonChron So you preferred corruption and mismanagement? Incredible.

@RBReich The trouble is that there are 100s of millions if guns in circulation in the US with the 2A essentially set in stone. I’ll settle for a minimum purchase age of 21, like there is for alcohol and cigarettes. That’s about all we can do. That and ban bump stocks and such.

@BrianGitt @ShellenbergerMD @AlexEpstein @BjornLomborg @MartyBent @DanielTurnerPTF @Atomicrod @max_gagliardi @pwrhungry @MeredithAngwin @EcoSenseNow Nuclear does seem like our best option. Scratch “can be built mostly anywhere.” That’s obviously false (Fukushima). Places likely to experience natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, wildfires, etc. must be ruled out. Still a great option.
English

@RuinerNIN666 @MartyCl96346423 @stclairashley It would, but it won’t. Not in the US. Of course it has in the rest of the first world. Here, people embrace extreme positions to stick it to the enemy, which is simply the other party.
English

@MartyCl96346423 @stclairashley I don't think people realize the second amendment was written 250 years ago. When slavery existed, indian attacks on the frontier happened, and most large predator animals were not nearly extinct. Wouldn't it be nice if our society evolved past the need for guns at home?
English

@twobblermangrov @marigolds @jbouie Unfortunately, unlike in years past, the ugliness can be consolidated and amplified through social media.
English

@marigolds @jbouie I appreciate pieces like this that still humanize people like her. An empathetic reader can both take pity on her life, while also understanding just how much pain and ugliness she is capable of inflicting on others. You see how real people are capable of turning out like this.
English

@Jim_Jordan What’s YOUR solution? Blaming Biden isn’t a solution. Inflation is global currently. Oil companies have record profits and aren’t inclined to change anything.
English

@corbitt_randy @AZ_Brittney I see what you’re saying about an actor giving a performance, but I’m inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt here. He’s from Uvalde after all. It likely hits home for him and was personal.
English

@1Lelia @JohnCornyn Straightaway raise the age to purchase guns to 21. That alone may have prevented several recent mass shootings. We HAVE to be able to do at least that much. I realize there are millions of guns and the 2A isn’t going anywhere, but let’s at least raise the age. Tobacco is 21!
English

@JohnCornyn We need thorough background checks, waiting periods, increased age for purchase, and we need strict limits on rapid fire, high velocity, multiple rounds weapons that mutilate bodies beyond recognition and are intended for mass quick killings. Ban AR15 types.

@JHitchcock99 @clairlemon Yes, and it could not be a more serious violation of women’s rights. For me it dissolves the social contract. A state government with that power over my wife, daughter, and other women is completely agregious and unacceptable.
English

@JHitchcock99 @clairlemon It really does seems it could get that insane quickly. We’re for sure going to reach the bizarre reality of getting an abortion in one state perfectly legally, then driving a couple miles across state lines and the same procedure is murder punishable by decades in prison.

@s1othlovechunk @C_Kavanagh @su3su2u1 @RedRedSuit @wildernessExpat @GurusPod Deeply stupid comment. It’s disconcerting that so many seem to *need* to believe this.

@C_Kavanagh I would love an example? As it stand, you're just ad homineming or projecting. You decide.
