Watching “For All Mankind.” Alt history show on Apple TV. Somehow, before Apollo 11, the Soviets land on the Moon and America and the world has to respond to this. (Vid is an Apollo astronaut in a bar watching a cosmonaut landing on the moon.) The day after, the astronauts are released to “get pissed” and blow off steam. They pile into their sports cars and race each other to the bar. I thought, watching them run out the building, that one lesson people would take from this, a false lesson was: “NASA lost the Space Race because of all the ‘boys and toys’ mentality, all the hypermasculine competitive focus inside the building they kept them distracted from the real job, reaching the moon and beating the Soviets.” This is exactly the attitude many have towards so much of modern society, and has been going back to the 60s. We have the privilege of knowing it’s false, but in a world where the Soviets got to the moon first, so many people would have this exact attitude towards NASA’s “failure.” People are usually trapped by their mental frameworks and seldom look outside them, whether they’re right or wrong. Writing believeable characters and societies requires you to learn their mental frameworks so you know how they see the world, so you can reproduce it even if it’s odious to modern values. Always be honest.
