@MerkyAgua @shagbark_hick I've lived in rural upstate most my life. Upstate is upstate, then it breaks down from there. Are you retarded

Case in point here is Upstate NY. This place should be a paradise. It's superlatively gorgeous -- maybe the most beautiful place east of the Mississippi -- and fertile. The housing's cheap, there are OK jobs, soil's fine, life is easy. But people here are MISERABLE. Daily interactions involve leering, awkward staring, cold shoulders, nervous energy. Loner-hermit types avoid others; elderly are crotchedy and skittish. DinerGoth types are lurking, vaping, being gay, mumbling to themselves in the Stewart's parking lot. No one's stopping to chat, no one's your friend, everyone is kind of tense in public. Guys are shooting up on the street in Watertown, Utica, even Tupper Lake. Any cop will tell you WEIRD, dark stories about what goes on here. The Kulak class is overtaxed; the State Workers dream of Florida once the pension hits. Young guys are all planning to move to South Carolina, Texas. Local government is a good old boys club for the dumbest, most cynical drunkards in each county. The whole vibe is "soviet." Except in lib enclaves, where the vibe is "tense, judgemental, 'in this house we believe', paranoid about MAGA, cloistered." And so this place is cheap, low-rent, undesirable. Gentrifiers try to come but they don't stay here. This place resists any attempt to "reinvigorate" it. The dysgenic darkness hangs over every inch of it; no amount of bright-eyed yuppies can fix it. Albany can't fix it. It's all graft, corruption, awkward stammering parochial nutcases wandering the streets in between disability checks. The residents of so many places here are the genetic remnants of those who didn't have the gumption or the brains to go West when the time came, and it shows. Literally the best move we have is to pay people to LEAVE. If I was the governor I'd allocate massive amounts of money towards this. I'd straight-up pay people to clear out, get out of here, move along. I'd pay their moving expenses, send them to Florida or whatever. And we'd flourish.

One of the great luxuries one pays dearly for in America is to privilege of not living around miserable people. There are many places in the USA that *should* technically be a paradise, but aren't, because the residents of that place are wretched bastards. Likewise, there are many places in the USA that are objectively middling, crappy, bummer-type places that actually rock because they're full of cheerful, friendly, optimistic people. People gladly pay the premium and move to wherever the "happy people" are moving, even if the land itself kind of sucks.

@shagbark_hick Being in NYC means being your own boss isn't easy. I'll take recommendations though, as I try to figure that shit out myself

I mean this is intuitive. What man has a "boss"? What woman is attracted to a man who has to ask another man if he can "have the day off?" The gangster, the hobo, the self-employed nutcase -- all are more attractive to 90% of women than a wagie.

@shagbark_hick Something ive noticed over the years. The guys who pull a lot of chicks never have a boss. He might own a deca-million dollar grossing company he may live down by the river in a van. But he never has a boss

@MerkyAgua @shagbark_hick I have lived here my whole life. Everything north of NYC is upstate. It's a catchall, and it makes sense.

@shagbark_hick Classic non New Yorker take. You miatakenly lump eveything north of NYC together. You got the geography wrong. Rochester, Utica, Syracuse. That shit isnt "Upstate". Neither is Ithica. Watertown and Tupper is North Country, a sub set of upstate maybe. Definitely shit holes.

@shagbark_hick This is true. Moving to upstate ny was the most isolating experience in my life. There is so little passion, so little love for life up there. I do visit often, as I live in NYC, and enjoy the scenery and hiking trails, though.

UPDATE ON ONTARIO ARSON: “The paper product alone that was inside of the warehouse was worth $500 million. The building itself was worth $150 million.” Chamel Abdulkarim is first facing state charges and then a federal arson charge for his Tuesday act. U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli announced that the federal arson charge against Abdulkarim carries a minimum of 5 years in prison and a maximum of 20 years. Essayli confirmed that Abdulkarim posted Instagram video showing himself lighting the fires and saying, “You know, if you’re not going to pay us enough to effing live, or afford to live, at least pay us enough to not do this.” Combined with the state charges and over $500 million in damages, Abdulkarim is potentially facing life in prison. He’s lucky nobody lost their life as a result of him creating that massive inferno. (nbcla on TT)

Mugshot released of Chamel Abdulkarim, the man accused of starting the Ontario, California, fire that burned down the 1.2 million-square-foot Kimberly-Clark distribution center on Tuesday, causing an estimated $500 million in damages. The 29-year-old Abdulkarim invoked Luigi Mangione during his confession, say feds. He also allegedly filmed himself on Tuesday lighting the fires while complaining about not being paid enough for his work. He was arrested two miles from the scene, soon after the six-alarm fire brought 175 firefighters to battle the inferno. Abdulkarim faces federal arson charges in addition to state counts of aggravated arson. He could face anywhere from 10 years to LIFE IN PRISON due in part to the huge cost of damages to the property (which was a total loss) and the combination of federal and state charges. He’s a Highland resident and employee of NFI Industries, the logistics provider for the warehouse. A federal filing came late Thursday for him, after an ATF and FBI investigation, and a state arraignment is expected Monday. The federal affidavit alleges Abdulkarim filmed and posted video of himself setting fire to multiple pallets of paper goods inside the warehouse. The DOJ also alleges Abdulkarim sent communications boasting about the destruction. One message read, “I just cost these [expletive] billions.” Abdulkarim is being held without bail and will appear Monday for his state arraignment.

@rushicrypto That's the weakest drivel I've ever heard. People had absolutely nothing, lived in a war zone, in the past, and still popped out 5+ kids. Weak.

Imagine making life so expensive, so stressful, so uncertain… that people don’t even want kids anymore. Not because they hate the idea of family but because they’re scared of what kind of life that child would have. That’s not normal. That’s a system failing people.

@RjFisher1998 @rushicrypto I do listen to my friends who've had children. They're broke, stressed 24/7, their kid was exposed to porn by another student (kindergarten) at school, the list goes on and on. It sounds hellish.

@rushicrypto It’s almost like if you turned off propaganda and listened to the people who are actually raising children you might figure out it’s quite enjoyable and rewarding.

@Johnny_DGB @rushicrypto It's an actual reality. The gf and I have decided, like most of our friends: no kids. Our society is ugly, both inside and out. We make 100,000+ a year too. We're not poor per say.... I can't imagine making less and thinking about having a kid... no fucking thank you.

@badwool9 In a Police Officer's eyes: Retrieving stolen property takes a few hours, risks confrontation, contributes 1 good boy point to their quota. Pulling you over for going 5 over takes 15 minutes, very low risk, contributes 1 good boy point to the quota. Modern KPIs killed policing.

Left headphones in a shop. Went back 5 minutes later. Gone. Shop got cctv footage of someone taking them. They remember serving the person - who used their bank card - 2 mins later. Police got footage, witness and description yet are saying there’s nothing they can do. Useless.
