LBC presenter Shelagh Fogarty and Guardian columnist Jonathan Freedland discuss how tough life is for Israelis. “It’s the blitz… it’s very difficult to imagine… waking up the children to go to an underground shelter…” Words fail me.

🚨🚨Trump on Truth Social: All of those countries that can’t get jet fuel because of the Strait of Hormuz, like the United Kingdom, which refused to get involved in the decapitation of Iran, I have a suggestion for you: Number 1, buy from the U.S., we have plenty, and Number 2, build up some delayed courage, go to the Strait, and just TAKE IT. You’ll have to start learning how to fight for yourself, the U.S.A. won’t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren’t there for us. Iran has been, essentially, decimated. The hard part is done. Go get your own oil!

The misuse of the work genocide in the context of the Israeli death penalty law incites violence against Jews inside and outside Israel. It also minimises the acts of legal genocide such as the Palestinian genocide against the Jewish people on October 7th. I don’t support the death penalty under any circumstances but I live in a country, the US, that also employs the death penalty. In fact, over 50 countries retain a death penalty law. Scapegoating Israel about the death penalty is a weaponised double standard, a form of antisemitism.

Israel must immediately repeal the discriminatory death penalty law passed today by the Knesset, as it contravenes Israel’s obligations under international law. The United Nations opposes the death penalty under all circumstances. The implementation of this new law would violate international law's prohibition of cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment. Additionally, this law further entrenches Israel’s violation of the prohibition of racial segregation and apartheid as it will exclusively apply to Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Israel, who are often convicted after unfair trials. Read @UNHumanRights earlier statement and analysis about the death penalty draft bill: ohchr.org/en/press-relea…

In the late 1970s, Micronauts toys were fascinating to me. Produced by Mego Corporation, they were interchangeable, with a 5mm peg-and-port system, incredible articulation, and often featuring translucent colored plastics and chrome pieces, and others with magnetic joints. They were high-quality toys, for sure. Then, in 1979, the Marvel comic book came out, and it was even more fascinating than the toys. Baron Karza was the ultimate villain of the Microverse. I would not be shocked to know that some of my friends here are fellow fans of the toy line and/or the comic book series, mostly written by the great Bill Mantlo.

Brand power is a real and measurable thing. If you think of cars and I say "Mercedes" you probably think "high quality made in Germany". If I say Coca Cola you probably think of exactly the same that billions on planet earth are thinking. One of the strongest brands ever from the 90s would have to be LucasArts. When you saw that logo, chances were high that the game behind it was pretty damn awesome. Seeing it makes me think of some of the best gaming experiences - not just for the 90s but ever. What other brands would you put into that A+ tier of the pre-2000 era?

For whoever needs to hear this I'm the only Jewish person to lead a political party - third largest in the country. The Daily Mail have been & always will be my enemy - they historically supported fascists & continue to do so. I'll take no lectures from them on Antisemitism.

I often think about the technical limitations that game designers of the 80s had to work with - both in terms of software and hardware. The game that stands at the very top is Elite. Think about this for a second: The core game code on the BBC Micro version occupied roughly 22 KB of memory. Now think about what Braben and Bell turned that into: a universe with eight galaxies, each containing 256 star systems (for a total of 2,048 planets/systems). Each system featured unique details: government type, economy, technology level, population, commodity prices, and even descriptive text (e.g., a planet known for "carnivorous arts graduates" or similar quirky combinations). If you still need a bit more help to contextualize that, try this: Elite was smaller than many modern text files or desktop icons, yet it contained (and let you freely explore) a multi-galaxy-spanning universe that felt vast and limitless. Oh, and by the way, the game also rendered 3D wireframe ships, stations, and planets in real time on a 2 MHz 6502 processor. This is no slight on today’s game designers. They work with what they have, and that's okay. But when you think about the worlds that some programmers created with the tools they were given, it sometimes breaks my brain trying to understand how they did it. Elite is a true masterpiece on so many levels. I played the C64 version back in the day, and even 40+ years later it still feels like one of the most incredible programming wonders ever.
