A Nation on Trial: Besigye Before Court Without His Lawyers. Have the oppressed not joined the oppressor in betraying Gen. Dr Kizza Besigye Kiffefe ?
As you return before Justice Baguma today, in what many of us regard as a sham trial, we may not know exactly what to do to save you, our senior brother and comrade, Gen. Dr Kizza Besigye. But ultimately, we believe in your struggle to make this country great again.
Today, you are being brought before court without your chosen lawyers. Counsel Erias Lukwago was arrested and charged with misprision of treason—a treason-related offence—while representing you. Senior Counsel Martha Karua was detained, deported and declared persona non grata, preventing her from continuing her professional responsibilities in Uganda. You have understandably hesitated to appoint new lawyers, fearing that they too may be persecuted, intimidated or criminalized merely for defending you. What kind of justice puts the defence lawyers themselves in fear of arrest and prosecution?
The environment is terrible. For you & us. To continue pushing under these circumstances is the act of a lifetime hero—an example to all practitioners and beneficiaries of servant leadership. You are a man who has laid down his own life for his people, for what you believe in, and for what every nation and society deserves.
As a people, I feel we have betrayed you—our lead fighter and voice. We need to do better, but how, under the current circumstances? How do we convince or compel those holding power that what they are doing is wrong—that they must abandon impunity and lawlessness and do the right thing?
How do we make them listen to the voice of the people and stop abductions, vote-rigging, human-rights violations, corruption and the many other wrong practices and elements of misleadership?
They have heard us, but they have chosen the wrong path again and again, without remorse. Who will rein in Gen. M7 and his son, Gen. MK? Is there anyone above them?
They arrested you and have kept you on remand for nearly two years without a completed trial. Yet you sacrificed so much for this country, including during the bush-war years, when you abandoned a promising medical career, joined them in the bush, fought alongside them, treated their gunshot wounds and other illnesses, and risked your own life, career and everything else for the fighters of the NRA.
Can Gen. M7 not take stock of all this and release you?

No court appearance without Karua, Lukwago — Besigye
The unexpected boycott brought proceedings to a standstill and drew attention from trial judge Emmanuel Baguma, who demanded an explanation for the defence team’s absence, with the veteran opposition figure (@kizzabesigye1) saying, “I would rather rot in jail,” insisting he would not participate in the trial unless represented by lawyers of his choice.

On Wednesday, 8 July 2026, I will formally move a motion seeking leave of @Parliament_Ug to introduce a Bill to amend the Parliament (Administration) Act, 2006.
The proposed amendment seeks to revise the provisions governing the appointment and removal of the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament. Specifically, it proposes that the Leader of the Opposition be elected by Members of Parliament belonging to opposition parties together with Independent Members, rather than being appointed through the current arrangement.
This reform is intended to strengthen democratic representation, enhance accountability, and ensure that the office of the Leader of the Opposition derives its legitimacy from the collective confidence of the Opposition and Independent MPs,

Some fella used to be here attacking individual Ugandan journalists, media practitioners and media houses for not doing enough and not being brave enough. As fate would have it, soon the leader of the party he subscribes to eventually left the country citing risks associated with bravery. The fella went very mute. That brave fella by the way does not live and work here. I don’t know why I love and prefer that the so called brave ones would come to speak and practice that bravery from here on the ground! 😂😂😂😂😂😂

The letter is not to CDF, it’s to the public. It’s meant for public consumption.

Uganda’s Real Number Two, Gen. Salim Saleh, has written a letter to CDF Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba (@mkainerugaba) concerning “THE LUKWAGO ISSUE.” In the letter, Gen. Saleh emphasizes the urgent need to formally brief the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Norbert Mao (@norbertmao), on the ongoing case involving Dr. Kizza Besigye (@kizzabesigye1). He notes that as the political head of the Justice Ministry, Hon. Mao has a duty to update the public on the current situation and promptly address any concerns raised by citizens.
