I received an email from a friendly acquaintance who is a committed Catholic, a successful Irish business person, parent and is what would generally be considered to be a serious and successful individual. In answer to a question, I had told them I was spoiling my vote, they replied that they were planning to vote for Connolly as a protest vote. This was my reply (I have obviously removed anything that could identify my correspondent): 'Thank you for your thoughtful reply. With regards to Catherine Connolly. Irish Catholic 'conservatives' have been compromising by voting for ‘progressive’ leftists for about 30 years now. We did it inside our main political parties as the now both indistinguishable FF and FG were taken over by the liberal progressive element of Irish society. That also happens to be an ardently anti-Catholic one. We saw that in McDowell blocking Maria Steen, and in others. Connolly is pro-abortion, pro-‘trans rights’, can’t give a simple answer to the question ‘what is a woman?’. She is a far too eager supporter of Hamas. She is rabidly pro-open borders. She is loudly anti-American. She is the polar opposite of what this country needs in a head of state. Yet, the Irish political establishment allowed her to get on the ballot while making sure no ‘conservative’ could. They did that because if it comes to it, she is more acceptable to them than any conservative. The reason for that is that though she will make strong leftist gestures, she will not challenge their legislation. The thing is, they know that what they will be legislating for, against family, against tradition, against Christian values and the integrity of our nation, she will rubber stamp. Therefore I very strongly believe that spoiling the ballot is the only way to send a message. That ‘they’ have won is already decided, it’s only a matter of which M&M candidate we get, Blue, Yellow or Red. They are all the same on the inside. By spoiling the vote we reject this sham ballot, we make a stand and unlike disputed numbers at a protest march or online campaign, every single spoiled ballot has to be counted. If and I grant it’s a big if, there are enough spoiled ballots, and the number is greater than the first preference votes of either of the three curated candidates, then we will have shown that ‘their’ president has no popular mandate. That’s a place we can pitch a battle from. It just might have the potential to force or encourage a resignation and a re-run of the nominations and election. Granted, that’s a long shot but I’m not giving any of them my vote because they do not merit it and our country deserves a fighting chance. So I’m fighting with the only peaceful tool available to me this month, the ballot box and my ‘spoiled’ vote.'
