@Elora2xx @butts18455 @Jenny_1884 It's not just the money, which is important because - you know: food and things. It's the self respect that gets taken away. Imagine feeling that you have no value. That you're no more than junk, to be discarded. And that people like the poster have such little regard for you.

@Elora2xx @butts18455 @Jenny_1884 My dad worked as a mechanic from 16. In later life, he was a bus driver. At his assessment, sat in his wheelchair, he cried when told he was fit to work because he could pick up a pound coin between his finger and thumb. What job involves picking up individual pound coins?

Sickness benefits worth £3,000 more than a minimum wage job. How is that right? Nobody should be better off on benefits than someone who gets out of bed everyday & does a full day’s work It’s just wrong

The line from the populist right is we should have another general election because of “Labour’s broken promises”. If that should trigger a new plebiscite, let’s have another referendum on EU membership at the same time. I’m game for it.

@RoryStewartUK Terrifying! WW2 is almost beyond living memory. Now, few understand how and why it began and the horrors and genocide. To many, it's just movies, now - like Captain America, where the goodies win. But we're not the goodies - not while we empower Trump. Please learn from history.

The replies here from Trump supporters suggest that many feel that • there is no moral truth • all claims of justice are hypocrisy • rules and laws are for the weak • the strong must triumph Nietzsche anyone?
Rory Stewart@RoryStewartUK

Trump is quite different from almost all previous leaders since the early Middle Ages. He does not even pretend - with Greenland or Gaza or international aid - to be acting for just reasons. The impact of this naked abuse of power will be staggering.

@punkjay @ropbert4 @trashalou @fesshole Agreed. In any event, @ropbert4 doesn't quite know how to use full stops, as evidenced by his comma splicing. As such, I feel that his contribution to this conversation is somewhat diminished.

@ropbert4 @trashalou @fesshole You're sending another text every time you would usually use a full stop? Now that's aggressive. And really fucking annoying

I insist on using a full stop at the end of sentences when I send text messages. Apparently, my junior employees hate this and our HR liaison had a word about it. It's not that I don't care but I've been writing for 47 years now. Changing that muscle memory is hard.

@williamnhutton Pensions are a scam. The grasping fingers of the government are wrapped around them like the coils of the Lernaean Hydra, each head representing a new tax, regulation, or restriction, regenerating every time one is cut off, ensuring escape is nearly impossible.

Torsten Bell is a really important appointment. Pension fund reform needs a fresh impetus and more readiness to take on spurious arguments defending vested interests - for example blocking the creation of a second Pension Protection Fund. If Bell can’t do it, no-one can.

Just before my first kid was born, I handwrote a letter to him expressing my hopes and dreams for him, my fears & feelings as a new dad, as a gift for him to open on his 18th birthday. I've just realised to my horror that I completely forgot to do the same for my second.

@JackyHolyoake @RoryStewartUK @RestIsPolitics Can you cite specific examples illustrating how "Our Christian centred culture is under attack from Islamists"? Doesn't hugely bother me, IMO God(s) were made up by men who thought themselves too clever/special to labour with others in their tribe and demanded tithes instead.

@alan_h_stone @emotorbarbie @clairebubblepop That's great, good for you. You realise things are different now? I struggle week to week just making sure my kids are properly equipped for school whilst also trying to hold down my own job, whilst also caring for my elderly mum. A holiday is the last thing on my mind.

Holy shit I saw #Dispatches said people on benefits were on £35k. Absolutely no one is £35k, Tories brought in the benefit cap making damn sure people struggle to survive. But allegedly we’re all going on hols abroad every year. Tell that to my kids who’ve never had ONE holiday.

@PaulMoynan1 @MFIJake @IsabelOakeshott And X marked your response as 'probable spam'. That says it all, really. Sensible voices are suppressed because they jar with the corrupt narrative and idiocy that's being pushed. Time to leave so X can become the right wing lune echo chamber that its owner wants it to be.

@sophielouisecc No! Not even close. I'm inferring that you think it is. You're wrong, even based upon the few governments you've experienced. You're silly to ask the question, after just a few months of this government. You're also silly, if you think the 14 years prior saw a better government.

@Mofoman360 No. It's been declared and no laws or rules have been broken. It's not as though he's fiddled it so the tax payer stumps up for his moat to be cleaned or his horses to be kept warm or to pay £millions in bent contracts to his chums. Put a sock in it.

@danielgoyal @WatchRatio What's a doc/nurse. You're not pretending that nurses have the same opportunities, earning potential and pension provision as doctors, are you? Don't make me laugh.

@WatchRatio Shame. I guess that explains why some folk think £17/hr is ok for a doc/nurse. £17 before tax or NI, before license or insurance fees, before transport, parking, before exams, courses, before uniforms, equipment (including phone). I think they are worth way more. But you do you.

I recently paid my painter £30 per hour. He did a good job - better than I could have. It then dawned on me that he earns more than the vast majority of healthcare and education staff. Quite something, how little we value those that look after our lives and our kids’ futures?

@LondonPeteM @WatchRatio @danielgoyal Nor does he have the vast earning potential of the doctor and a DB pension funded by the tax payer. A pension so good that pension tax rules have just been changed to accommodate how much they build up.
