Sometimes toughness looks like playing hard for 40 minutes, but sometimes toughness looks like cheering your teammates on from the bench. In any circumstance, toughness is an option. Toughness is about the effort, not the role.

Doc Rivers said, "The whole team has to make a choice at some point, is great worth it? But for winning, you have to sacrifice." Winning comes from hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. • It takes commitment. • It takes selflessness. It comes down to one question: "What are you willing to pay for this?" Any achievement requires sacrifice and hard work because success is never a product of shortcuts or complacency. What Sacrifice Really Means: 1. Sacrifice means putting the team needs above your own - Prioritizing team goals over personal interests builds unity. It takes selflessness and removes your ego from overcoming team aspirations. A great team isn't made up of individuals seeking personal glory, but of people who trust each other enough to work towards a common goal. This type of sacrifice builds trust, collaboration, and leads to better performance. 2. Sacrifice means choosing hard work over convenience - Great things come from hard work. When you choose hard work, you sacrifice other activities and choose to want more than just being average. Opting for hard work instills discipline and strengthens your character. These are essential for overcoming challenges and achieving long-term goals. 3. Sacrifice means prioritization and focus - When you sacrifice something, you are determining what truly matters to you because you are choosing to focus. By focusing on what's important, you learn to manage time and resources more effectively. This leads to increased productivity and the ability to achieve more with less. Making one big decision makes smaller decisions, much easier. 4. Sacrifice is choosing to go all-in and be committed - When you sacrifice something, you move forward with full commitment. That singleness of purpose ensures dedication, determination, and perseverance. This level of commitment breeds a deep sense of responsibility and accountability, crucial for personal and professional growth. 5. Sacrifice means choosing resilience and grit - is built through an adaptable mindset and strategies to be resilient. When you sacrifice something, you are choosing resilience in the face of adversity. You are building the muscle of mental toughness. It means choosing the ability to endure, push through discomfort, and bounce back from setbacks, a skill vital for success in any endeavor. 6. Sacrifice is the price you’re willing to pay for achievement - When you sacrifice, you acknowledging that success comes at a cost. You understand what price you are willing to pay and put a realistic perspective on goal attainment. It shows commitment to know what it takes and still go after it. It prepares you for the inevitable trade-offs required for success, ensuring you value and make the most of your achievements. "You have to fight to reach your dream. You have to sacrifice and work hard for it." - Lionel Messi

Pat Riley said, "Excellence is the gradual result of always striving to do better." Excellence isn't one day or one week, it is a constant. • It means competing every day. • It means being committed. • It means giving your best. Don't crave for success, but aim for excellence in everything that you do. Peak performance is misleading because it's not a singular moment, it's about the journey. The focus should be on sustainable excellence and long-term mastery. It starts by winning today and then tomorrow and then the next day. 6 Ways to Win the Day with Excellence: 1. Set Clear Goals for the Day Goals provide direction and a sense of purpose. Measure your performance and make sure it aligns with your values. Goals don’t always have to be big and broad, they can be daily cadences or weekly expectations, but they give you a target to aim for. 2. Own your Mindset, Own your Actions Take ownership and responsibility for yourself and your mindset. Adopt a growth mindset and believe that your abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and effort. Take responsibility for your thoughts, beliefs, and actions. Challenge self-limiting beliefs and replace them with empowering ones. 3. Compete with the You of Yesterday Each day, strive to outperform the person you were yesterday. Challenge yourself and look to improve, learn, and grow every day. The comparison should not be outside of yourself, but it should always be to your previous self. Progress becomes a testament to your dedication and growth journey. 4. Embrace "The Power of One More" As Ed Mylett calls it, harness "the power of one more". When you feel like you've reached your limit, push yourself to do one more task, make one more effort, or take one more step toward your goals. It's in those moments of extra effort that significant progress is often made in the mind and body. 5. Will Yourself Every Day with Resilience Embrace the mindset that setbacks and failures are opportunities for growth and learning. • Expect that there will be setbacks. • Expect that there will be adversity. When you try new things, you develop the ability to adapt and grow stronger. 6. Reflect on How to Improve and Win Tomorrow At the end of each day, take some time to reflect on your achievements and setbacks. Celebrate your wins and identify areas where you can improve. Set a plan for the next day. Continuous self-assessment and planning are essential for long-term success. Growth becomes a daily habit when you combine discipline, perseverance, and intentionality. "When you wake up, think about winning the day...just think about one day at a time. If you are worried about the mountain in the distance, you might trip over the molehill right in front of you. Win the day!" - Drew Brees

Gregg Popovich said, "A strong culture is not about winning, it's about creating an environment where everyone can be their best selves." Your culture is what you accept on a daily basis. What you reinforce is what the culture will sustain. 9 silent culture killers every leader needs to know: 1. When you don't communicate or give feedback. 2. When you haven't set clear expectations. 3. When you worry about the wrong things. 4. When you don't recognize and celebrate good work. 5. When you fail to support growth. 6. When you recognize or celebrate the wrong people. 7. When you let toxic people stay. 8. When you don't manage workloads well. 9. When you allow favoritism and don’t hold people accountable. "A culture is strong when people work with each other for each other. A culture is weak when people work against each other for themselves." - Simon Sinek

9 Lessons from March Madness Underdogs: 1) They live by the mantra: Believe or Leave 2) They use their timeouts to calm down, rest, and/or strategize… not to ruminate over mistakes or live in the past. 3) They break the entire game down into mini, 4-minute games. They only aim to win ‘the next 4 minutes’… not the game. 4) They don’t worry about the play that just happened, they are focused on The Next Play (the one in front of them). 5) They have incredible Bounce Back ability (they respond well after a turnover or missed shot). 6) They know basketball is a rhythm game. Their team’s goal is to ‘establish ours and disrupt theirs.’ 7) They live off of momentum… and they create it by doing the little things: boxing out, sprinting the floor, making the extra pass. 8) They acknowledge that it doesn’t matter WHO scores, all that matters is that WE score. 9) They are crystal clear on what they do well and what their strengths are… and they stick to their game plan.
