Spent the last couple hours observing @moonpay’s launch campaign for PayBox and I have to say, it was one of the better crypto product launches I’ve seen in a while. On the surface it looked like a simple $USDC giveaway, but underneath it was a carefully engineered acquisition campaign. The first wave removed almost all friction to maximize onboarding, the pause between waves created anticipation and kept CT talking for hours on end, the community ended up generating thousands of screenshots, tutorials, memes and even debates around privacy, @moonpay hosted an X livestream that pulled tens of thousands of live viewers, and by the second wave they had people creating MoonPay accounts, running transactions they subsidized and even downloading the Paybox app. Every step increased familiarity with the product while turning users into marketers. That said, acquisition and retention are two very different problems. MoonPay has clearly shown they know how to get hundreds of thousands of people through the door. The more interesting question now is how many of those users continue using PayBox once the rewards stop. Campaigns create spikes, systems create slopes. I’m genuinely looking forward to seeing how they approach retention because there’s a lot the rest of the industry can learn from this launch. Great work by the @moonpay team.
