In defense of Indian 🇮🇳 democracy! During Prime Minister Narendra Modi most successful visit to Norway a minor incident happened. A Norwegian journalist demanded that the prime minister starts holding press conferences. She claimed that Indian democracy is in bad shape. May be its time to pause? May be its time to be a bit curious to the world’s largest democracy? Two weeks ago five Indian states and territories held elections. The turn out in the battlefield state of West Bengal was 94%. In the last local election in Norway it was 62%, in many European local elections turn out is below 50%. Can voting in massive numbers be a signal Indians trust their democratic process? In the same election BJP won big in Assam and West Bengal. It lost even bigger in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Can this diversity be a signal that Indian democracy is reflecting the will of the people? The journalist referred to a democracy ranking putting India at 157 in the world, behind many dictatorships and deeply troubled states. When a ranking is so obviously contrary to common sense, why not ask critical questions to those making the ranking rather than demand that leaders shall comment on nonsense? I recommend Salvatore Babones book “Dharma democracy”. The book debunks convincingly the flawed methodology of these rankings. It was referred to a ranking claiming it’s very dangerous to be a journalist in India. Reality is that it is more dangerous to be journalist in the US and far more dangerous in the vast majority of other nations in the world. Let’s be real. India is not perfect. Of course there are incidents. India has a population the size of North America, South America and Europe combined. But India is much more peaceful than Europe or the Americas. That’s remarkable - given the ethnic, language and religious diversity of India and the many development challenges. Unless we consider democracy a form of government only suited for some very small, peaceful and homogeneous Western European nations, may be we should commend Indian democracy? India is the only major former UK colony which became and has remained a democracy. Its sometimes claimed that the Brits taught India democracy. If that was the case why isn’t Myanmar or Pakistan or the Gulf kingdoms democracies??? Reality is that Indian democracy is both homegrown and extraordinary successful.

In all my bauddhik sessions I mention this point. It makes one proud when we are reminded of glory of our ancestors and lineage. Lineage is not always just blood. In our case, the lineage of ideology and dharma is more profound than blood. For a Malayalam Sangh swayamsevak, lalitaditya is his ideological ancestor. For a Marathi swayamsevak, Lachit is his ideological ancestor. A swayamsevak of sangh parivar looks at Shivaji or pratap or lachit thusly. Hence I am not at all surprised swayamsevaks raising photo of Shivaji in Diamond Harbor and naming a garden as Shivaji Udyan in Bengal. It is those Hindus in whom Hindutva’s main point hasn’t seeped in properly - they shout at this “outsider hero” cry. Them or outright anti Hindu progressive libtards. Bloodlines end/dilute. But there is always someone to take up the baton and carry it forward when one falls. That is strength of Hindu dharma.

I'm going to make some obvious points. (1) Blowing up all the oil infrastructure in the Middle East is an insane idea, and may well result in a global economic crash and humanitarian crisis unrivaled in the lives of those now living. We're talking about the price of everything everywhere rising, from food to gas, at a moment when inflation was already high. All of that will be laid at the feet of the authors of this war. (2) The antebellum status quo of Feb 27, 2026 was just not that bad, but we're unlikely to return to it. Expect indefinite, long-term, ongoing disruptions to everything out of the Middle East. (3) Also assume tech financing crashes for the indefinite future. The genius plan to get the Gulf states caught in the crossfire has incinerated much of the funding for LPs, for datacenters, and for IPOs. Anyone in tech who supported this war may soon learn the meaning of "force majeure" as funding gets yanked. (4) Many capital allocators will instead be allocating much further down Maslow's hierarchy of needs, towards useful basic things like food and energy. (5) It's fortunate that all those progressives yelled about the "climate crisis." Yes, their reasoning about timelines was wrong, and much of the money was wasted in graft, but the result was right: we all need energy independence from the Middle East, pronto. It's also fortunate that Elon and China autistically took climate seriously. Now they're going to need to ship a billion solar panels, electric vehicles, batteries, nuclear power plants, and the like to get everyone off oil, immediately. (6) It's not just an oil and gas problem, of course. It's also a fertilizer problem, and a chemical precursor problem. Maybe some new sources will come online at the new prices, but it takes time to dial stuff up, particularly at this scale, so shortages are almost a certainty. That said, China has actually scaled up coal-to-chemicals[a,c] (C2C), and there's also something more sci-fi called Power-to-X[b] which turns arbitrary power + water + air into hydrocarbons. But all of that will need to get accelerated. I have a background in chemical engineering so may start funding things in this area. (7) Ultimately, this war is going to result in tremendous blame for anyone associated with it. It's a no-win scenario to blow up this much infrastructure for so many people. Simply not worth it for whatever objective they thought they were going to attain. But unless you're actually in a position to stop the madness, the pragmatic thing to do is: scramble to mitigate the fallout to yourself, your business, and your people. In Marathi it is called ‘Mridgandha’. Now you have same information in 3 languages. Now, some new useless information for the good folks on X. In rural Maharashtra, people call the first rains ‘Vāsāchā Pāus’, because the earth gives out a fragrance. Pu.La. Deshpande famously said that if that fragrance could be packed in a small bottle he would never use any other perfume. Poet Ashok Bagwe wrote a song on this ‘Vāsāchā Pāus’ which I composed music for. Here it is - youtu.be/RNfGJ4UB9Jw?si…

This was told to me by a 65yo gardener. The smell of rain has a name and it’s called “saundhi khushboo” in Hindi. And “petrichor” in English. It comes from oils released by plants and a compound made by soil bacteria. When rain hits dry ground, it spreads into the air and that’s what you’re actually smelling. Completely useless in daily life. But once you know it, you’ll notice it every single time it rains.

The world knows him for light, but Raman's 1st love was Sound. Western physicists (like Helmholtz) claimed that cylindrical drums (like the snare or bass) could never produce harmonic overtones (sweet, musical notes). They said it was mathematically impossible. Raman looked at the Mridangam & Tabla & realized the ancient Indian instrument makers had solved a physics problem Westerners had not even defined. He proved that by applying metallic paste (Syahi) in a loaded, non-uniform distribution on the drum membrane, Indians had created the world's only harmonic drum. He published this in Nature, essentially telling the Western scientific community that Indian artisans were master physicists. Source: Musical Drums with Harmonic Overtones, C. V. By tithi - today was the day Chhatrapati Sambhaji was finally murdered by Aurangzeb after 40 days of torture. Just on the eve of Hindu new year tomorrow, this Hindu king was finally released from the 40 day agony by the gods. He refused to let go his dharma and convert to Islam. He faced inhuman tortures meted out by Aurangzeb with fortitude and courage which is incomparable in history. His death sparked movement which eventually evaporated all the hopes Islam had of conquering and converting India. India is still a Hindu nation because of countless kings like Sambhaji Maharaj, countless warriors and common folk who stayed true to dharma and fought back extremely bitterly for 800 years. My shraddhanjali to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj on his balidaan divas. 🙏🙏😔

I respect Amol Palekar for his talent, assent on quality films, more than commercial, & his apparent straight approach. So I was surprised when he made a needless negative comment on PM @narendramodi saying’ If i were to write a letter to PM i know I won’t get a reply’. He said this after recalling how late Indira Gandhi replied to his letter . This happened at the Nalanda International Literature Festival ( @nalandalitlive ) at Rajgir in Bihar. Palekar made the comment in the session on his recently-published memoir ‘ Viewfinder’ where there was no need to make a politically loaded comment against PM. When i got up from the audience & told him that Modi was known for replying to letters & so what was the basis of his comment, he replied : “ That might be your view. But my view is different”.

India was always a Hindu civilization. Other religions came later, converted many by the sword. The Muslims wanted a separate nation, India was partitioned as muslims used violence and killing to get partition. What remained was a Hindu nation where our forefathers decided that they wanted a modern republic which protected the freedom of religion for all faiths, not the hateful regime the Muslims created. The India of today is a Hindu civilizational nation, a modern republic with full freedom of religion guaranteed by a constitution which we the people, gave to ourselves out of a peaceful choice. People who say ‘We’ fought for freedom should know their history, their support and the violence of the Muslim league and Muslims who wanted a separate nation and partition. It is this India alone which protects and guarantees the freedom of religion because it is built on Hindu values and Hindus accept the right of all to practice a faith of their choice, not the Muslims of Pak and BD who support a theocracy, practice a religion which denies the right to others to freely practice a religion of their choice, say daily that their God is the only God. They have driven the Hindus and other faiths out and treat them as second class citizens and in Pak by law. People who say ‘We’ fought for freedom got their Pakistan which they wanted. Let us not have these bigots who support fundamentalists, who support those who kill Hindus propagate a fake history.
Arfa Khanum Sherwani@khanumarfa

No one wants to turn India into a Muslim country. And India was never a Hindu nation and never will be. We fought for freedom to build a secular, liberal, democratic republic. It’s shameful that India Today has invited such a vicious Islamophobe and brought disgrace upon itself.

MASSIVE.. MASSIVE EFFECT! Maharashtra state Govt has finally woken up to curb the rampant misuse of the SC/ST Act. > Social Justice Minister Sanjay Sirsat said that any case filed under this Act will not lead to an immediate arrest. > Every case will first undergo an inquiry by a special committee. > Only if the claims are found to be true during the inquiry will further action be taken. > If the allegations are found to be false, the FIR will be cancelled immediately.

Good question. During MMS ji's govt, India had a Strategic Petroleum Reserve of ZERO. But they had initiated construction of phase 1 which was still ongoing when Modi ji took over. During Modi ji's govt, the phase 1 was completed in 2017, they filled the reserves to capacity taking advantage of lower rates whenever possible, then started construction of phase 2 of Strategic Reserves in 2018. For 50+ years, India did not have any SPR. You are asking Modi ji to make up for all such deficiencies of 50+ years in 10 years. But the amazing thing is, they are actually doing something and delivering to fix some of those big gaps due to apathy of last 50 years in India.
