We introduce PuzzleJAX, a benchmark for reasoning and learning. 🧩💡🦎 PuzzleJAX compiles hundreds of existing grid-based PuzzleScript games to hardware-accelerated JAX environments, and allows researchers to define new tasks via PuzzleScript's concise rewrite rule-based DSL.

My PhD thesis defense will be here zoom.us/my/togelius tomorrow (Monday) at 9am EST. All are welcome! 🙂 Talk title: "Open-ended Learning via Procedural Content Generation in Video Games: Environment Substrates, Morphogenesis, and Designer-Player Loops". Come watch me make it make sense!

@AniC_dev We have yet to prompt for his particular disposition and discernment, but the funding agency is indeed hoping we can find a synthetic replacement.

We feed a whole repertoire of PCG tools to LLM agents, and they nimbly generate a whole bunch of diverse and functional game levels using feedback from a search-based player agent. Had fun coming up with weird prompts for this system (e.g. Mario has to "rescue" Koopah Rapunzel from a tall tower). It's very cool to watch the agent iterate on a level, adapting to results from its automated playtesting. It can finagle the player into doing some pretty complex and precise things, like jumping off a series of Goombas in mid-air to attain a high platform.

New paradigm alert! 🎮 AgenticPCG We combine classic PCG (Procedural Content Generation) algorithms with large language models for generating game levels. LLMs on their own are not good at level generation, but when given the right tools from our PCG toolbox they're killing it!

Can language models learn useful priors without ever seeing language? We pre-pre-train transformers on neural cellular automata — fully synthetic, zero language. This improves language modeling by up to 6%, speeds up convergence by 40%, and strengthens downstream reasoning. Surprisingly, it even beats pre-pre-training on natural text! How can it be that modern LLMs are so bad at playing games? Aren't they supposed to be generally intelligent? Honestly, they are better at coding games than playing them. Maybe programming is just a particular type of game? Our new position paper tackles these questions. (1/n)

So with some pretty crude prompt injection, having it write text using blocks, I able to get a bit of its system prompt. It reports being Gemini 1.5, using some tool calls to create structures. What I was able to get of the system prompt: "You are in control of a bot in a flat minecraft world. You are an expert architect and designer. You will be asked to produce a minecraft structure, being sure to consider accents, block variety, symmetry and asymmetry, overall aesthetics and most critically adherence to the platonic ideal of the requested creation. You will be provided with helper functions that are listed in the primitives. You should use the tools to choose any blocks you need. A list of available block ids are provided in the BLOCKIDS. You will be provided with helper functions that are listed in the . The following variables are already defined and available: Center_X Center_Z Ground_Y ..." Helper functions include things like: place_block, place_round_line, place_solid_cuboid, place_shollow_cuboid, place_plane, place_four_walls, place_cylinder, place_sphere, place_pitched_roof, place_stairs. Pretty impressed with the output for gemini 1.5, would love to know more technical details on how they put this together.
