@BenniKim @airmainengineer Derated thrust take offs do not save any fuel though. They save money on engine wear and associated maintenance costs

I had exactly the same experience in Campinas too. I felt the captain, at about two third of the takeoff roll already, increase thrust to the max. Had he not pushed and kept the lower power settings that the company manual advertise, we may have ended up in serious trouble. The problem is that there is a perverse incentive. Captains gets bonuses when they consume less fuel. So there is a temptation to take risk and takeoff with as little thrust as possible. Might be a factor in the recent Air India crash too.
