@PlayerGaelic I saw something from Rugby League in England a few years ago and basically there Go Games equivalent was make multiple small sided games on the basis of no subs
English

@squacko26 All in the melting pot at this point
English

@fhsperformance @movementcoachkm Clubs / parents need to organise
' playdates' at their field / pitch / Hall etc. Just organise day / time turn up and play no coaching . Use small sided format if appropriate. Replace the streets / Park. And that is then more likely to actually start happening again then...?
English

Sport does far more for children than improve their fitness.
It builds character, develops relationships, teaches resilience, and shapes how they handle disappointment and success.
Recent podcast with @colnoc77 explored all this for parents & coaches 🧵
English

@movementcoachkm Fairly unheard of now kids taking up a sport at 13/14 yo or older
English

@squacko26 What you get is loads trying stuff way too young and way less multi sport as they get older
Everyone loses

These are nice numbers and all that, but why is there so much “coaching” going on for 7 year olds?
Formal coaching in club nursery, formal coaching at school
It’s not helping. Proportionately participation numbers aren’t any better than before and worse in some areas.
Players lack game knowledge and creativity because they are over coached far too young.

The 2025 participation figures reveal that the Gaelic games are actively thriving, and reaching deeper into schools, clubs, and communities than ever before. #GAABelong gaa.ie/article/2025-p…

@nathanrjohns As a non rugby person / player I never understood why 7s is not used to grow rugby across the country. It'd a different sport yes but barrier to entry surely lower
English

One year on from the IRFU's cut of sevens, Gael Force Sevens debuts this week in Kinsale.
A new team featuring former internationals and Olympians is looking to revive Irish sevens.
Can they do it? Depends on how you define success.

@Irish_Grounds Why always the rush to take down nets and goalposts at the old lansdowne Road ? Jobs for the boys?

One of the maddest kit manufacturer brandings ever. Made kits for Dundalk and Shels as well. Am I missing anyone else?

@TheHockeyPaper 5 a side hockey a good idea although some of the rules need to change. No tomahawk and no long forehand hit I would suggest

The FIH called it an 'outstanding outcome' for the development of Hockey5s. thehockeypaper.co.uk/articles/2026/…

@AndrewAbraham11 @JvanderB78 @guv61 Can we get a 'non competition ' fixture schedule. So fixtures are made at start of season and league table isn't kept. On a practical where I am (Ireland) would need Incentives / penalties to ensure fixtures are played.
English

@JvanderB78 @guv61 In UK rugby union doesn’t do leagues until u17. Cup competitions are introduced at u14 (I think).
Up until that point all games are friendlies between clubs. They’re still competitive games. It does put a large admin burden on clubs to have fixture secretaries.
English

@WalesLadiesHock @TheHockeyPaper @HockeyWales How does GB hockey work . Surely England, Scotland, Wales should all get a decent fair share. None of my business but strange the way it works . FIH need to tell nations to focus more on building up domestic hockey and then international hockey less is more for some nations.
English

@TheHockeyPaper It’s incredible that #welshhockey players have to miss gr8 tournament preparation due to lack of funds. (No criticism of @HockeyWales ).
How can Welsh football + rugby afford all their support staff yet #hockey can even get players to tournaments?!
English

Financial constraints placed on nations with limited funding participating in FIH events stike again. thehockeypaper.co.uk/articles/2026/…

@TheS_Resource Many get 'told' sport is about 'a pathway' and then think I'm not good enough for that 'pathway' and then gradually drift away .
English

@NoThirdMan I would guess in some of these places their is a stronger club culture with more cohesion and more volunteers with cricket passion and knowledge. This can help development.
English

Perhaps state school Trusts/Academies offer a route forward? Otherwise pretty soon the entire England team will soon come from a tiny % of the general population.

Given the ongoing uncertainty regarding potential disruption to the national roads network, we have taken the decision to postpone all LOI Academy fixtures scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday 11 April 2026.
This decision has been made to provide clubs with early clarity and to ensure that those requiring coach travel have sufficient notice to cancel bookings without incurring unnecessary costs.
We will review the status of Sunday’s fixtures tomorrow afternoon and will communicate a further update to clubs in due course.

@GreyBearLtd @FAgeCoaching @PeterPrickett @CoachingFamily @GRFootball Don't need a coach for every 3 v 3 team. Adult supervision is all that is required
English

What the FA fails to recognise is that there is already a lack of pitches, coaches, facilities etc. at 5v5 teams will usually have 7-8 players. At 3v3 the team will have 4-5 players.
So at one of my sons previous clubs they had 8 teams at 5v5 with players on waiting lists as they could not fit them all in. Transfer that to 3v3 and you end up with 12-14 teams. Where are the extra coaches coming from and the pitch space?
This format also won’t benefit all kids, the more talented kids fair better at 5v5 with keepers and more structure.
English

With the FA’s upcoming move to smaller sided games at younger ages, our article covers 5 benefits young players will receive from playing 3v3, along with some street-style games to use in your training sessions
