@mkwomackjr @HashtagGriswold If that person is a child, I say yes. What's the point of being the wealthiest country on earth if we don't use some fraction of that to help people who are in need through absolutely no fault of their own?

@Smileyyeg Not even once? If this is a little trolling, apologies for missing the joke. I had a car in Chicago, never once drove to a White Sox game, because it would have longer and been 10X more expensive. Many such cases

@FrailSkeleton What ludicrous cherry picking. There are probably only 20,000 people who satisfy these requirements, and many of them are only in LA BECAUSE they are in college, and therefore not trying to get pregnant

Republicans like to say 'but you need ID to buy beer.' But I dare them to give the full details of the SAVE Act. Buying beer requires: Show a driver's license. Done. 5 seconds. The SAVE Act requires: - A passport (which half of Americans don't have) OR /1

@dollarsanddata @Dividend__Doc But it can easily go the other way. I know several parents of special needs kids who rely on public school because private schools would not have to follow their child's IEP

Private schools are the most expensive placebo in America. Nowhere else will you pay $250k+ for something that has so little impact on school achievement. My latest on why private school isn't worth the cost: ofdollarsanddata.com/why-private-sc…

Today's @Tennessean article tells us that fewer than 3 people a day are moving to Nashville. Each day, however, there are about 29 births in Nashville and 17 deaths, switching out older people for little babies at the rate of 12 per day. Shouldn't we be making Nashville child and family-friendly instead of building apartments fit for a singles and the no-kids lifestyle?

@McMullinRC You're highlighting something true (high demand elasticity due to close substitutes). But it's not cynical to say that this might be the point. The more painful a tax raise is, the lower future lawmakers will keep taxes. So if I'm a low-tax REP, this may be a feature, not a bug

@user84829272 @hollowearthterf This is obviously a film continuity thing. I'm sure men working in movies today do the exact same. The difference between my face at 9 and 4 isn't huge, but if bright lights and a camera were on me, I would need a second shave. Many such cases.

For anyone who gripes about all the annoyances with decentralized elections (the electoral college, slow/irregular counting, volunteer workforce), there is no better illustration of its benefit than that it makes this reality less likely to actually occur
Headquarters@HQNewsNow

Donald Trump is reportedly considering issuing an executive order declaring a “national emergency” to give himself unprecedented powers over elections. The order could allow him to interfere with voting ahead of the midterm elections.

@KasperStats But it's not a tradeoff. It reduces all kinds of accidents. It's just that it reduces injury accidents by more.

This is a great lesson about tradeoffs. It's true that roundabouts cause more accidents; that's why governments build them. They cause *more* accidents, but at lower speeds and safer angles. It's better to have twice as many collisions at 20mph and 30° than at 50mph and 90°.
Dilan Esper@dilanesper

traffic circles suck and one of the reasons i don't trust a lot of policy wonks in this area is because they advocate this drivers do not understand them which means tons of accidents and near misses. Go back to signals and stop signs.

Interesting microcosm of why even good policy can feel cursed Public policy can use data to overcome misperceptions or biases to make welfare-increasing recommenations But then people evaluate those policies using the same biases, and think they don't work (see also: vaccines)

@dilanesper Interesting hypothesis, and that's why we have emprical research...which says they greatly reduce accidents In the US pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC14… My guess is the reason your gut reaction is lying to you because while people mess up roundabouts less, it's more galling when they do

Roundabouts are the closest thing to a cure-all. -Better traffic flow -Lower injury and fatality rates -Lower maintenance costs -More aesthetic than traditional intersections We need more of them.

It's a business generating significantly less than $600,000 in profit in a $50 million property. This should be a major red flag that business being slow, and not property taxes, are to blame. I sympathize, but don't see why my taxes should subsidize it
The Tennessee Holler@TheTNHoller

“His property tax went up nearly half a million dollars in one year.” Tom Morales, owner of Acme Feed & Seed in prime downtown Nashville, says a city-wide reassessment spiked his tax from $129K to $600K yearly, and he may have to close it down. Full: fox17.com/fox-17-investi…

@TwinkTheory @kellockx Very true. The theme of the movie is that regular guys can traumatize women and justify their behavior. Turning Al and Joe into psychopaths 100% undermines that. Saltburn's even worse. Revealing the whole thing as Oliver's plot destroys the films' critique of the mega-wealthy
