Our future is digital. The future of health is digital. #DigitalHealth applications are proving to be a boon for health systems in wartime #Ukraine - enabling providers to reach more and more people in the most challenging of circumstances, often in remote locations or areas close to the frontlines. It was eye-opening to attend this week's #eHealth Summit in Kyiv - on my sixth visit to Ukraine since early 2022. Even amidst the horrors of war, Ukraine is showing impressive leadership when it comes to digital health - through the efforts of @MoH_Ukraine and Minister @ViktorLiashko, working with a range of tech innovators. In January 2022, the month before full-scale war erupted, we conducted a comprehensive assessment of Ukraine’s health information system. Now, we are preparing a similar assessment, focusing on Geographic Information Systems and emergency response capacity, to gauge the war’s impact on the health system. We have worked closely with the Ministry of Health and the Public Health Center to design, develop, and roll out the new Electronic Surveillance System, vital for improving disease surveillance and responding to health emergencies. Together with the EU, we are also supporting Ukraine’s access to the European Early Warning and Response System. This plays a crucial role in cross-border notification and exchange of information on chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats. We are also directly involved in various other digital health projects, from #telemedicine to syndromic surveillance to health #informatics. Digital health offers Ukraine hope and progress at a time when it faces some of the biggest challenges in its history. Together, let’s ensure that everyone – no matter where they are or who they are – can benefit.

New frontiers in #DigitalHealth are cropping up faster than before - but are @WHO_Europe Member States - including EU countries - ready? I addressed the 🇪🇺 EPSCO informal meeting of health ministers in Budapest under @HU24EU - spelling out progress made and opportunities yet to be seized. The #COVID19 #pandemic showed us just how much digital solutions are crucial for better health. Digital health is ultimately about putting people first. The European Health Data Space is doing just this, empowering people to take control of their own health data. It’s clear that Europe is fast embracing the digital health revolution. The progress is admirable. But there are still many challenges. Financial constraints. Inadequate training. Unequal access to technology - illustrating inequities in health. And insufficient mechanisms in place to evaluate progress. WHO/Europe is proud to be working with the @EU_Commission and all our 53 Member States region-wide to overcome these obstacles. Our newly established Health Information Network - thanks to the support of the European Commission - will be crucial for strengthening health information systems, data governance and interoperability across our entire region. Last month, WHO/Europe launched the first ever Strategic Partners’ Initiative for Data and Digital Health, bringing together over 100 representatives from Member States and many others - including the private sector and academic institutions - to exchange best practices. And we are also conducting several data and digital health activities to support Small Countries. Two years ago, the EU showed its commitment to Europeans’ health and well-being in adopting the Region’s first-ever Digital Health Action Plan. Digital technologies have the power to truly transform health care and public health. Today, they are not a luxury, nor are they optional. Let’s work together to unleash their full potential!
