@weeddude @FreddyLA7 You're not wrong. I said the same thing early on when he started getting VIP treatment everywhere. That's not a true American road trip experience (as most would experience). But at the end of the day, that's not his fault, and I'm glad they had a good time.

@FreddyLA7 my hot take
Michael Rusch@weeddude

unpopular opinion — i think i am ready for the @FreddyLA7 story to end. i genuinely enjoyed the beginning. a german soccer fan discovering america on a budget was simple, funny, and surprisingly wholesome. but somewhere along the way — the story outgrew its original premise. it stopped feeling like one guy experiencing america and started feeling like america competing to experience him. maybe none of that is his fault. but by the end, this was no longer a german tourist showing us america on a budget. it was america showing one tourist everything money usually cannot buy. that does not make the story fake. it does make me curious about the parts of the story we still have not heard. because somewhere between the motel rooms, taco bell, waffle house, and the nationwide VIP treatment, the narrative changed. and i think that change ended up being more interesting than the road trip itself. the real story was never really @FreddyLA7. it was what the rest of us wanted his story to represent.

So long, America🫡🇺🇸 49 days ago we landed in the USA to follow our country at the World Cup. We had no idea it would turn into the trip of a lifetime. Thank you to everyone who followed along, and to all the people we met who made this journey even more special. We honestly don’t have the words to express how grateful we are for everything you did for us. This trip exceeded every expectation we had. We came here with an open mind, wanting to experience as much of the country as possible. I still remember telling my friends on the flight to Atlanta that I hoped we’d get to meet a few locals on this trip. Now we’re flying home with friends all across the USA. Before we came, we heard so many stereotypes and warnings about America. People told us about safety concerns, that they might check our social media at the border, and all kinds of other things. None of it matched our experience. This was probably the most welcoming country we’ve ever visited. So if you have the chance to travel, do it. The world isn’t nearly as bad as the media often makes it seem. 99% of people are awesome! I heard this quote somewhere during the World Cup, and I think it sums up our experience perfectly: “If you want to hate the world, watch the news. If you want to love it, travel it.” Thank you, America ❤️🇺🇸

So after all the pre-tournament criticism, angst, and fearmongering (much done with anticipatory glee), the 2026 World Cup was a historic success. Incredible games, record crowds/viewers, and a cultural phenomenon. People were safe, entertained, and joyous. Visitors discovered, and Americans were reminded, just how wonderful our country is, all through the lens of soccer. I’m so happy for, and proud of, my country. Best World Cup ever. Thank you, America. 🇺🇸

@SamBK71 @DefiantLs She would probably just throw out a phrase like “systemic racism” and then say it’s not her responsibility to expend the emotional labor it would take to explain that racist question to a racist.

@SpencerKlavan Existing in Oklahoma during the summer is very confusing. It's 100 degrees & 85% humidity outside, but every building is a blustery 63 degrees, with a 15 mph gust of arctic air directly from the vents inside.

Having air conditioning is better than not having it. On this key principle of American exceptionalism, all decent patriots can agree. But would it be intolerably treasonous of me to wonder if we need quite so much air conditioning? Does national pride require that the interior of every airplane and retail center evoke the howling wastes of an arctic tundra? Would George Washington curse us from his grave if we kept our taxi cabs at, say, a cool 75 rather than driving them by infinitely decreasing intervals toward their theoretical limit at zero Kelvin? I ask out of love.

A great way to fix this is to throw anyone doing this in prison. Fire Americans to replace with thousands of visa workers? Straight to jail, and assets seized. This story has been told countless times. Fire American staff and hire foreigners. Over and over.

🇺🇸🇮🇳 Xbox Indian CEO Asha Sharma just announced firing 3,200 Americans. She filed for 5,000 H-1B visa hires this year. Asha was appointed CEO of Xbox in February by Indian Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

🚨BREAKING NEWS! 🚨 Ben Shapiro just confessed on his show that while Charlie was being transported to the hospital and bleeding out to death, his security was on the phone with Charlie’s security receiving updates. I knew it. I knew it. I knew it Someone explain to me why during the minutes while Charlie was DYING in the back seat of the car— Charlie’s security team was providing updates to Ben Shapiro’s team rather than focusing entirely on saving Charlie’s life and finding the killer? I will remind you all that Brian Harpole— one of the security members who was IN that car en route to the hospital, is currently suing me and is using BEN SHAPIRO’S lawyer who has sued me relentlessly on Ben’s behalf for the last 3 years. @benshapiro hated Charlie. EVERYONE knew that. So why the hell was this demon receiving updates in the mere minutes after Charlie was hit, en route to the hospital?!! WHO ON CHARLIE’S SECURITY TEAM BETRAYED HIM IN THIS WAY?! EVERYTHING Ben did following the assassination made my alarm bells go off. I have told you guys that there is something about the Daily Wire and their relentlessly stalking of me following my firing that has made me feel altogether unsafe. I have felt their obsessive focus on destroying me is deranged and increasingly dangerous. What did Andrew Kolvet mean when he told me “it was supposed to be you?” Why did Turning Point betray Charlie so quickly by allowing Ben to open at Amfest after declaring immediately that he would “pick up Charlie’s blood mic”? Why didn’t Ben mention this before today that he was receiving status updates while Charlie was bleeding out? I clocked that Ben was TOO invested in this. His energy on stage DEMANDING that Megyn Kelly call me evil and his overprotective stance on Erika always registered to me as deeply nervous. Ben Shapiro is Satanic. Everything in my soul tells me he worships Satan, literally. Look at his demeanor in this clip. We need to find out exactly who on Charlie’s team betrayed him by providing immediate updates to this parasite. Share far and wide.

@AlexiLalas My husband made all-state in high school from a small town. His coaches didn’t do much in bringing in scouts to support players. He dreamed of going to OSU but considered smaller schools far away to walk-on, but it was unaffordable. OSU doesn't have men's soccer, so he quit.

@AlexiLalas Alexi, my husband &I were discussing this & wonder if the accessibility of men's college programs might be a bigger issue? Many of them are ivy league, private, or small schools on east or west coast. Do you think a lot of men fall off when they have to choose career over sport?

Youth soccer (youth sports) is a competitive market with businesses selling a product that obviously customers are willing to pay for. I’d love if soccer was free to all. But who is going to pay for all this free soccer?
Clay Travis@ClayTravis

One big US soccer thought: our youth development has to get more affordable. One of my kids plays travel. It’s at least $5k a year & this isn’t even super high end. We can afford it, thankfully, lots can’t. Youth sports costs in the US are out of control, soccer more than most.

@SeppBlatter LOLZ. Rich coming from you. But also, isn't it entirely possible that the decision was made by FIFA because of rules and evidence during an appeal? And not because of Trump?

Red cards are not overturned by political phone calls. They are overturned by rules, evidence and independent bodies. If a U.S. President intervenes with the FIFA President — and a player is suddenly cleared before a World Cup knockout match — the question is unavoidable: Quo vadis, FIFA? Football must never become a playground for political power. #FIFA #WorldCup #GianniInfantino #DonaldTrump

This makes a mockery of the whole tournament. If the USMNT win, Belgium will have every right to feel cheated, meanwhile the USA’s victory - by their best ever generation of players - will forever be tainted by accusations of favouritism and corruption. It’s bad for everyone.

BREAKING @TheAthleticFC Folarin Balogun will be available to play the USMNT’s round of 16 match against Belgium with his one-game red-card ban suspended. Extraordinary development. Story with @Dan_Sheldon_ nytimes.com/athletic/74234…

At this point, I’m ready to get rid of VAR and go back to refs making mistakes the old-fashioned way. VAR was supposed to eliminate controversy… somehow it just gives us slow-motion controversy.

@RealCandaceO @DefNotDarth @disclosetv I don't believe for a second that Trump actually influenced the appeal. I think he wants to THINK he did. But it was a controversial call that the team was going to pursue appeal avenues regardless of what our fucking president wants.

Balogun was in on goal. He beat the defender and was about to score. No red card. No penalty. No yellow card. No foul. No review. The bizarre thing is that Fox Sports showed a replay that began just AFTER the defender let go of the arm. So weird. How could the officials miss this? And how could the TV crew miss it as well? @USMNT

@rollgiantsroll @OldTownJG The biggest complaint is consistency. This ref didn't pull a single card the entire game on CLEARLY worthy penalties. Didn't pull one on this either. & then on a slow-mo, frame-by-frame evaluation, calls "Red" on an incidental impact that was initiated by the fouled party? Lame.

@rollgiantsroll @OldTownJG So let's get into the fact that a lot of us don't like the way VAR has evolved & how it's used to scrutinize and over-analyze plays like this & changes the natural flow of the game compared to what we all witnessed in real time.

Non soccer fans not understanding what is and isn't a card is always the most frustrating part of every World Cup cycle. It sucks for Balogun since it was clearly accidental, but it was definitely a red card.
Grant Paulsen@GrantPaulsen

So I’m not going to pretend to be a soccer expert. That red card seems asinine. That was not malicious or purposeful? 11 on 29 for 30 minutes plus he is out for the next game if you somehow hang on? That seems like a death sentence for speeding. Am I crazy? This is nuts.

Caleb Hammer schooled a guest on how taxes work in America, explaining that the U.S. has one of the most progressive tax systems. Caleb: Question, what percent does the top 1% pay in federal income taxes? Guest: None. (Brief silence) Caleb: Think it's about 40 to 50 percent? No, I think it's about... I believe it's about 35%. Then the top 10% pays 50 to 60%. Top 50% pays 99%. The bottom 50% of earners only pay 1%. Did you know we actually have the most progressive income tax system in the entire Western world? Did you know that? Guest: I did not. Caleb: Oh, we do. Of course you didn't know that. Why know anything before having an opinion? What the fuck is wrong with you?
