do you understand what just happened to your computer.. Google Chrome secretly downloaded a 4GB AI model onto your device. Without asking.. Without telling you.. It's called weights.bin. It lives deep in your system folders. It powers Gemini Nano - Google's on-device AI. And if you delete it? Chrome re-downloads it automatically. Like nothing happened. Just Google deciding your hard drive is their storage unit. At 1 billion Chrome users - that's 4 BILLION gigabytes of data pushed silently across the internet. The carbon footprint alone equals tens of thousands of cars running for a year. Check your disk right now: 📁 %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data\OptGuideOnDeviceModel To stop it: chrome://flags → disable Optimization Guide On Device Model → restart Chrome → delete the folder. Reshare so people know what's sitting on their computers.
Pirat_Nation 🔴@Pirat_Nation

Google Chrome is quietly downloading a roughly 4 GB AI model to many users’ computers without clear upfront consent. The file, called weights.bin, is part of Google’s Gemini Nano on-device language model and lands in the browser’s user data folder under OptGuideOnDeviceModel. It powers built-in AI tools such as “Help me write,” smarter tab suggestions, on-device scam detection, and page summarization. The download triggers automatically for devices meeting minimum hardware requirements, and Chrome often replaces the files if deleted. While the model processes data locally, installation happens in the background with minimal notification. The scale is noteworthy. Hundreds of millions or billions of installations add up to thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions globally from data transfer, even though each is a one-time event. To prevent or remove it, go to chrome://flags, disable the entries for the optimization guide on-device model and Prompt API, restart the browser, and manually delete the folder.

I have trump fatigue syndrome, and I admit it, I am a TFS sufferer—and I mean I suuuufffer. That man’s voice, his face, his gigantic ass, it has all become a Pavlovian torture system, and just the IDEA of it ever, possibly, mercifully being over, is all that keeps me going.

Donald Trump just blocked over 150 wind energy projects across America, killing 30 gigawatts of new power generation.  That is enough electricity for nearly 10 million homes. He is doing this while his unauthorized war with Iran sends oil markets into chaos and pushes energy costs higher for every working family in America. Wind already provides 10 percent of our electricity.  It powers Republican states like Texas, Iowa, Oklahoma, and North Dakota. American workers build these projects. American landowners profit from them. American grids depend on them. But Trump told us his goal in January. He said he does not want a single wind project built. Now he is using the Pentagon to make it happen, freezing routine military reviews that companies have relied on for years. We are in an energy crisis. Demand is climbing. Prices are rising. And the President is sabotaging American power production because he thinks turbines are ugly. This is not energy policy. It is a personal grudge dressed up as national security, and families across our nation will pay the price. nytimes.com/2026/05/04/cli…

Winston Churchill fought his depression with bricks. He'd lay them for hours at his country home in Kent. He joined the bricklayers' union. And in 1921 he wrote about why it worked. It took psychology another 75 years to catch up. He called his depression the "Black Dog." It followed him for decades. His method for fighting it back was as basic as it sounds: laying brick after brick, hour after hour. Churchill spelled out his theory in a long essay for The Strand Magazine. People who think for a living, he wrote, can't fix a tired brain just by resting it. They have to use a different part of themselves. The part that moves the eyes and the hands. Woodworking, chemistry, bookbinding, bricklaying, painting. Anything that drags the body into a problem the mind can't solve by itself. Modern psychology now calls this behavioral activation. It's one of the most-studied depression treatments out there. Depression sets a behavior trap. You feel bad, so you stop doing things, and doing less means less to feel good about. Feeling worse makes you do even less. The loop tightens until you can't breathe inside it. Behavioral activation breaks the loop from the action side. You schedule the activity first, even when every part of you doesn't want to. Doing it produces small rewards: a wall gets straighter, a painting fills in, a messy room gets clean. Those small rewards slowly rewire the brain. Action comes first, and the feeling follows. Researchers at the University of Washington put this to the test in 2006. They studied 241 adults with major depression and compared three treatments: behavioral activation, regular talk therapy, and antidepressants. For the people who were most severely depressed, behavioral activation matched the drugs. It beat the talk therapy. A 2014 review of more than 1,500 patients across 26 trials backed up the result. Physical work like bricklaying does something extra on top of this. It crowds out rumination, the looping bad thoughts that grind people down during the worst stretches of depression. Bricklaying needs both hands and gives feedback brick by brick: each one is straight or crooked. After an hour you can see exactly how much wall you built. No room left for the mental chewing. The line George Mack used in his post, "depression hates a moving target," is good poetry. The science behind it is sharper. Depression hates a brain that has somewhere else to be.
George Mack@george__mack

Winston Churchill used to lay 200 bricks per day to keep his mind busy when feeling down. Depression hates a moving target.

Give A Shit About Nature
Give A Shit About Nature@giveashitnature·
A single native oak tree supports 557 species of caterpillars. A Bradford pear supports about one. This matters more than most people realize. Caterpillars are how songbirds feed their young. Almost all of them. A pair of Carolina chickadees needs between 6,000 and 9,000 caterpillars to raise one brood of chicks. Bluebirds, warblers, vireos, wrens: same story. Adults might eat seeds, but the babies eat caterpillars. Researchers at the University of Delaware found that yards dominated by non-native plants produce 75% less caterpillar biomass than native-dominated yards. Chickadees in those yards were 60% less likely to even attempt to nest. Most caterpillars can't eat non-native plants. They didn't evolve with them. The leaves are chemically wrong. So when we landscape with crepe myrtle, Bradford pear, ginkgo, Japanese maple, Pieris, we're building a yard that looks alive and is functionally a desert. The food web starts in your front bed. It's the highest-leverage thing you can do. It's also the thing nobody tells you when you buy a house.

The Shallow State

We have a malignant narcissist, sporting the most dangerous pathology known to mankind, who is old, who is ill, who is aggrieved, who feels entitled, who has no self-control, who sees enemies in all disagreements, who is bent on petty vengeances, who feels his time is running out, who is without moral compass, and who is so prone to panic that he almost never sleeps - although he occasionally passes out at meetings, and who is fixated - above all else - at projecting grandiosity and avoiding or rectifying humiliation. Can it be more dangerous? Yes. And here's why: He is loopy. It's impossible to know his awareness level. He just spoke to children in a way that makes you think he didn't see children. He also walked sideways yesterday, while looking straight ahead. His true condition, which could impact all of us, is unknown, and we keep seeing concerning signs. Can it be more dangerous than THAT? Yes. And here's why. He is also his entire universe. In his mind, he is ALL THERE IS. The universe ceases to exist without him. THIS is why malignant narcissists with power will never go down alone - even when they shoot themselves in a bunker, they shoot the others in the bunker too. Dems REALLY need to begin forcefully presenting a narrative that Trump is erratic AND unstable AND no longer able to carry out the duties of the presidency - as the entire non-US world knows - and therefore he MUST be removed from office. It's NOT being said enough!!
