@OnDisasters It wasn't her size but aerodynamics requiring the same takeoff and landing distance as the much larger 747, and Concorde usually touched down at around 240mph compared to a 747 at around 150mph.

OTD in 1969, the very first British-built Concorde prototype —Concorde 002— took to the skies for its maiden flight.
Flown by chief test pilot Brian Trubshaw, the quick 22-minute trip was a huge milestone for the joint UK-France supersonic project.
A massive crowd of reporters showed up at the Filton airfield to catch a glimpse of the action. Even Trubshaw, who usually shied away from the press, was thrilled, calling the smooth flight "wizard—a cool, calm, and collected operation."
After taking off from Filton, the plane actually had to touch down about 50 miles away at RAF Fairford. As it turned out, the runway at the factory simply wasn't long enough to safely test-fly the massive new supersonic jet!

@Mattisamazing33 I said long ago that all political candidates should undergo rigorous psychiatric tests before being permitted to stand for any office representing the people. Follow ups should also be mandatory at regular intervals.

@VoicesofWW2 Ships? They were thinking they could use Rhine barges to cross the English Channel as they had no landing craft. That would have been entertaining to watch.

History tells us that air power alone has never forced surrender or capitulation - not even the tiny Italian island of Pantelleria, where the navy helped too. LEARN HISTORY- it’s there to help!!!tr.ee/3WsoffuABu @WeHaveWaysPod @ww2headquarters

April 1942. First flight of the first Rolls-Royce Griffon-powered Spitfire prototype, Mk XII DP845 (a converted Mk.IV). The Griffon II had a single-stage two-speed supercharger, producing 1,735 hp. The airframe strengthened for the engine’s increased power and torque.

@almurray @WeHaveWaysPod @ww2headquarters @James1940 Did they tell you about the volunteer fat bloke who squeezed his way down the little hatch into the cordite room beneath the shell room and then couldn't get back out? True story 😬😆

@Rainmaker1973 One who looks like James Bond, as his creator Ian Fleming showed us at the time. Here he is. End of discussion.
