I just had an AI agent send me a message over Slack, and my phone pinged. I responded, but something felt really weird, even though I get texts all the time. The difference here, though, is that this whole time with ChatGPT et al., I had control over when the agent talks to me: whenever I keep the tab open AND send a message. In other words, the agent can’t text me without me texting it first (in fact, it uses Server Sent Events, not WebSocket, since it’s not fully bidirectional). But I lost that control with agents that can run tasks and tools in the background and text me over Slack while I’m not at my desk. I’m sure I’ll get used to this, but pretty bizarre that now I need to pick up my phone to answer an LLM’s question.
