Im so thrilled to have secured the plate ‘PYN 1E’ from the DVLA auction yesterday. It was £2935.16, which is more than I thought I’d have to pay! I bought for my Jaguar X-Type that was used by QEII for 6 years at Windsor. She had the plate PYN 1F on it but the royal family have retained it, so I thought PYN 1E would be a nice tribute with the “E” being for Elizabeth.

Ein knapp 30 Jahre alter VW Passat B5 1.9 TDI. Baujahr 1998. Eine Tankfüllung. Von Hildesheim in Niedersachsen bis zum Polarkreis in Nordschweden. 2.398 Kilometer. Der deutsche YouTuber "Offroadventure" wollte wissen, wie weit der Diesel wirklich kommt. Die Antwort: weiter als die meisten modernen Autos. Der Passat wurde konsequent auf Effizienz getrimmt. Überflüssiges Gewicht flog raus. Dachreling und Antenne wurden demontiert. Filter erneuert. Spezielle Leichtlauföle eingefüllt. Rollwiderstandsarme Reifen mit erhöhtem Luftdruck. Geschlossene Felgen für bessere Aerodynamik. Kein Umbau im eigentlichen Sinn. Eher die konsequente Ausschöpfung dessen, was der 1,9-Liter-TDI hergibt, wenn man ihm die richtigen Bedingungen gibt. Tank randvoll gefüllt und versiegelt. Frühmorgens los. Route über Hamburg, Dänemark, Öresundbrücke, Schweden. Möglichst konstant fahren. Windschatten von Lkw nutzen. Jede unnötige Beschleunigung vermeiden. Nach 1.000 Kilometern zeigte sich, dass die Rechnung aufgehen könnte. Der Durchschnittsverbrauch pendelte sich dauerhaft um drei Liter auf 100 Kilometer ein. Nach einer Übernachtung nördlich von Stockholm weiter Richtung Polarkreis. Bei 2.090 Kilometern leuchtete die Reservelampe auf. Kurz vor Mitternacht erreichte der Passat den Polarkreis aus eigener Kraft. Dann wurde leer gefahren und vollgetankt, um den tatsächlichen Verbrauch zu ermitteln. 2.398 Kilometer mit einer Tankfüllung. Drei Liter Diesel pro 100 Kilometer. Der bisherige Bestwert des Fahrers lag bei 1.913 Kilometern. Übertroffen um fast 500 Kilometer. Drei Liter auf 100. In einem Auto von 1998. Ohne Hybridtechnik. Ohne Rekuperation. Ohne Bildschirm, der einem sagt, wie man effizienter fährt. Nur ein 1,9-Liter-Vierzylinder-Diesel, ein voller Tank und ein Fahrer, der weiß, was er tut. Der Passat B5 TDI war nie ein aufregendes Auto. Aber in der Disziplin, auf die es ankommt, nämlich von A nach B zu kommen, ist er schwer zu schlagen. Auch 28 Jahre nach seiner Produktion. @NormanSufrin @ListerLawrence Nearly all my local marked cars are Toyota Corolla Estates. Built in Derbyshire too so UK police cars for the Met. My local have couple of unmarked JCW Minis too.

Our ARVs are mostly X5 V6 diesels and Volvo XC90 diesels. I think they’re deliberately hanging on to them. Traffic still use 5 series or Volvo V90 estates. Pandas are a mix of Ford focus, Vauxhall Astras or Peugeots. No EV or hybrids. Unmarked get moved around but I’ve seen Golf R32, Skoda VRS etc. I get your point though. Remember when traffic used Range Rovers and Rover 800s?

One thing that REALLY gets on my goat is the UK police force buying foreign cars. There are around 40,000 police vehicles on the road and the majority of them are built abroad! That’s approx £1.2bn going off-shore if they’re replaced every 3 years. It’s only a matter of time until we have BYD police cars… If I was in charge of the country the first thing I’d do is mandate that all UK emergency services must buy vehicles built in Britain. 🇬🇧 I mean how obvious is that to help our own economy, job market and above all pride?

Any 50kWh small Stellantis van owners about? What are they like in reality range wise? Combo, Partner etc.

@modernheroestv Mate of mine has a 2022 one that he uses for work. Mostly in London but it usually shows 180 miles for a full charge. It wouldn’t do Greenwich to Oxford return trip without charging though.

@ListerLawrence Mot fail list looks easily fixable as long as the cause of the CEL isn’t too problematic/expensive. It’s the petrol 1.4 too so probably a safer long term bet than the (admittedly better but rather chuggy TDI). All the soft touch rubber will be disgustingly tacky by now though.

@AutoInfatuation How about a Volvo S80 4.4 V8. Rare car so shouldn’t depreciate if you can find one.

Got a massive hankering for another V8 Petrol to actually be my own car this time. I’ll put a dateless/suffix plate on it and do about 600 miles a month I’d of thought. Narrowed it down to 4 likely candidates: 2008-2010 Jaguar XF 4.2 V8. I have proper experience with these in 2.7D & 3.0D S form in the past. Drive & look great. 2005-2008 Mercedes E500 W211. Have owned two, both Diesels. One 220 and one 320 CDI - great cars, well built and do everything very well. 2003-2008 Jaguar XJ 4.2 V8 X350/8. Have owned the newer X351 and it was disappointing for me personally but most say this shape are great. Also think they look fantastic in the right spec. 2004-2006 Mercedes S500 W220. Widely thought of as the worst S-Class ever made, I think they are aging well and my Dads, 2005 320 CDI was great for 3 years barring an alternator and having all 10 of his parking sensors stolen off of his car with unbelievable ease 🤦‍♂️

We need a SIM card with unlimited data for the onboard WiFi in the new V-Class. Not sure if PAYG or Contract would be best? Never had to deal specifically with a data only SIM card, any suggestions on who’d be best for reliability and coverage in your experience?

MOT tester. I am supposed to top up and replace bulbs. If you bring your car to me with no water in the washers or a bulb not working. I am going to look super hard for a reason to fail somthing bigger. If you cant be bothered with basic maintenance why should I do it for you.
