@slantchev Europeans have reached the conclusion that the US is an unreliable ally and that, broadly speaking, they need to be able to take care of themselves. The details and political will are tricky at this point. Trump has blown up NATO as we have known it.

@EdwardGLuce @marcthiessen I commented to Mr. Thiessen that I found it odd he had “helped bring” countries into NATO without understanding what NATO was.

@marcthiessen Marc, Nato's purpose is not hard to understand; mutual self-defence. That obviously doesn't cover reckless wars of choice on which other members haven't been consulted & would never have advised.

So many longtime NATO supporters saying the same thing right now. I helped bring Poland, Hungary and Czech Republic into NATO. But denying us basing and overflight is inexcusable, as is their failure to help with Strait of Hormuz. No one asking them to bomb Iran, just let us use our bases and help escort ships. If they can’t do that, NATO has no purpose.

I'm pro-NATO. But I can't think of a single argument to refute what @MsMelChen says here. Not one. If others can, please weigh in.

@slantchev I’m seeing this as scrambling for a definition of “victory” that would allow Trump to pull out of the war with Iran. International legal definition of war crimes is nowhere on his screen and there is no foreign policy process at work where people could at least flag the problem.

Note that what Trump odds threatening here — “blowing up and completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants!” — is a war crime. If he issues such an order and the Pentagon carries it out, it will cover our military with shame that would make My Lai pale in comparison.

@StateDept @de_f_t State Department-if you bothered to look at the NATO founding treaty, you would know it contains no obligation to support unilateral aggressive US adventurism far away from the territory of the NATO member states, which the Alliance was created to defend.

PRESIDENT TRUMP: NATO wasn’t there for us. We send billions of dollars to them every year to protect them. We would have always been there for them. But based on their actions, I guess we don’t have to be, do we? Why would we be there for them if they’re not there for us?

@realJeremyCarl @juliaioffe @barnes_law If one seriously objects to a policy, they should resign rather than implement it. Otherwise it’s pure careerism. Colby is now at “Peak Colby” and doesn’t want to give it up. Fine. But it’s not a principled stance.

For decades, Elbridge Colby wrote that attacking Iran was “a recipe for perpetual war” that would be pointless and counterproductive. It's how he made his name in DC. Now he's helping carry out Trump's second strikes on Iran in less than a year. puck.news/how-elbridge-c…

@JohnJHarwood By twice electing Trump, through his harassment of our best allies, and now with the unconsidered war against Iran and the dire consequences for our allies in the Gulf region, the US has shown it is not a reliable ally We’ll keep paying the price. Sadly.

@havivrettiggur @EylonALevy US conviction, for years, that there were a bunch of moderates in Iran, just champing at the bit to negotiate seriously and give us what we wanted, was never grounded in reality.

Indeed. Larijani was also a well-regarded professor of philosophy specializing in Kant with several books to his name. He really knew his way around the German philosophical bookshelf. And he was a key architect of the massacre of tens of thousands of his own people, and since Khamenei's death the de facto power behind the throne of a tyrannical regime that has systematically gutted Iran for 47 long years. He was the very thing that had to be pushed aside if we are to have any hope of a different future.

@hahussain @simonmontefiore International law has force only when the states in the international system apply said law. Internationally law is not self-implementing.

If you’re an alien from space who just landed on Earth and started reading media and social media, you’d learn this: - When Bashar Assad uses sarin gas on Syrians, that doesn’t violate international law. Requires de-escalation. But if America punishes Assad by taking him out, that’s a violation. Requires vilifying America as a bloodthirsty empire. - When Palestinians kill 1,200 Israelis and kidnap 250, that’s not a violation. Requires de-escalation. When Israelis hit back, that’s a violation demanding Israel be isolated, delegitimized, dismantled. - When Khamenei kills 20,000 Iranians protesting his rule in less than a week, that’s not a violation of international law. But when America threatens Khamenei with war unless the crazy dude surrenders nuclear and ballistic missile programs, that’s a violation. What kind of law is this whimsical international law?

🚨 Norway just did what the rest of the world won’t. Former PM Thorbjørn Jagland was taken into custody today after losing immunity over Epstein ties. First real detention linked to this scandal. Accountability isn’t impossible. It’s just been avoided by our officials here in the USA. 🇺🇸

Years from know Pam Bondi will look at this testimony with great embarrassment. She will be thinking how did I allow myself to get manipulated into speaking like that and showing such indifference to the victims. She was a different person a decade ago.

@slantchev Russian info warfare proclaiming their invincibility has been damnably effective, despite vast concrete evidence to the contrary. Overestimation of great powers seems to be a systematic problem.

@slantchev @Bubblebathgirl Voting is, I would argue, a civic duty for all adult Americans. We already make it difficult for Americans to vote, as compared to those awful European countries that the Administration deems so deeply undemocratic.
