T MINUS 2 DAYS TIL REGIONALS.
I'm going to dive into the storylines for all 24 players in the field over the next few days. Let's start with some of the least known players.
THE UNDERDOGS
Connerisme: Conner has more tourney games played (60) than anyone in the field, and his stats are decidedly medium: he has a 4.33 AVP (which goes down to 4.47 if you exclude opening weekend cup games) and a 55% top four rate. His results were much stronger in Set 9, and 9.5 doesn’t seem to be clicking for him. He’s also getting IRL diffd at the moment, so his confidence and level of preparation are on the lower side going into the event. I don’t expect him to do well this weekend, but this is TFT and anything can happen.
Davidas: He’s coming into the event chalk full of confidence, having dominated the LCQ to earn his spot at Regionals on the same patch we’ll be competing on this weekend. He’s been an Urf main since the beginning of Set 9, which bodes well for a heavy Urf meta where a lot of players are playing catch up on how to play around the various +1 options. With that said, we have no way of knowing if he can hang with this field. Outside of LCQ (which, by nature, doesn’t include other players from Regionals), Davidas got day 3d at two cups and only has 12 tourney games played across the entire set. He’s the only player representing the French Canadian scene at the event, and he’s hoping to put them on the map as a strong piece of the NA TFT community.
Filup: When I did my player research, one stat immediately surprised me: Filup has the second highest AVP (3.64) on final weekends of any player in the field. Unlike most players, his AVP actually improves when he gets past opening weekend play in cups. This bodes well for Regionals, since Filup is clearly comfortable going against stronger competition. I’ve never watched him play, but he’s a relative unknown that we should all have our eyes on this weekend.
im jack: A mainstay of the high elo TFT community, Jack is taking his first shot at regionals. He says he’s one of the weaker players in the field, and his stats back that up: he has a 4.55 AVP and barely about a 50% top four rate. He’ll have a lot of people rooting for him this weekend, so hopefully he can defy expectations (including his own). Regardless of how he performs, Jack is scaling up his gameplay and I would expect to see him back in the future and potentially poised to compete with NA’s best.
Phoenixaa: He’s the least known member of the preeminent study group in NA TFT, which includes k3soju, Setsuko, Milk, Prestivent, and Kiyoon. He got invited for a reason–at his peak, this man plays some great, creative TFT. With that said, he’s clearly not enjoying the patch or the set and his form is suffering as a result. I’d love to see him do well this weekend as he’s an awesome guy/player and deserves more recognition from the community, but it’s going to be an uphill battle this time around.
Tleyds: He may be in the underdog category, but he’s gaining lots of respect from his peers as they get more exposure to his play. He’s been on back-to-back DTIYDK power rankings, and got votes from all but three ballots heading into Regionals. His confidence is high heading into the event, even though he prefers to play more flexibly than the meta allows. It’s his first Regionals, but he’s a player to keep an eye on this weekend.
TorontoTokyo: The other qualifier via the LCQ, TorontoTokyo is the player I’m having the most difficult time evaluating. On the one hand, he only made it to the final weekend of a single cup this set and he averaged a 6.33 once he got there. On the other hand, he’s done very well in scrims and impressed a lot of NA’s best while doing it–he even snuck into the DTIYDK power rankings at 15th. He’s a former SC2 pro and has a lot of experience competing under pressure, so he’s unlikely to get shaken by Regionals nerves. TorontoTokyo is one of the underdogs with the highest chance of making it to the final day this weekend.
VanillaXD: He’s the lone member of the notorious LAB study group to make it to Regionals. His 4.18 AVP across the set is right in the middle of the pack, but he’s a known ladder troll (and now he can add scrim troll to his resume). Some players may count him out based on his LP alone, but I’m not one of them. He might not be built for ladder, but that’s not a necessary condition to do well in tourneys. Vanilla has unflappable mental and an infectiously joyful attitude about TFT and his opportunity to compete in Regionals. I’ve never had the chance to study his play, but he was my favorite interview of all the players heading into the event and I’ll be rooting hard for him to succeed this weekend.
Xnieamo: His sample size is low (just 19 games), but his 4.05 AVP is impressive. Xienamo isn’t optimistic about his chances this weekend because it’s taken him a while to lock into a legend and core strategy–he’s the only player in the field who predicted that he would go dead last. That could be a reason to count him out, but I’ll never forget when Kyivix did the same thing in Set 7 and went on to win the event. Can lightning strike twice?
