Sixty years of Arto celebrated on
St. Patrick's Day.
St. Patrick's Day was my father's birthday
&
Why we picked it as our founding date.
I'm a bit of a romantic.
My father's name was Arto.
The Company carries his name
Arto was Born in Egypt.
His father — my great-grandfather — was an orphan from Armenia.
Arto left Egypt with almost nothing, just a suitcase.
Egypt first.
Then Lebanon, same thing; just a suitcase.
He made it to the United States in the 1950's.
Checked out New York — didn't feel right.
Houston — didn't feel right either.
He arrived in Los Angeles late in the 1950's and fell in love with everything here.
He made it his home.
He started as a Good Humor Man (the ice cream man)
Then the milkman — delivering to restaurants and homes all over the city.
In the evenings, he went to Aviation Mechanics School.
On his route, he met an artist, not my mother.
She made ceramic murals & Arto made thin brick veneer to surround them.
He saw something, his creative mastery took over.
Arto offered tile to the restaurants and homes he visited.
Side hustle at first. Then All In.
My parents divorced when I was ten, there were hard years for him.
I started working for him at nineteen, while I was still in college.
I didn't make it any easier.
We parted ways more than once.
The business had many iterations:
Clay brick and installation to start.
Then concrete products alongside the clay.
Then manufacturing only — no more installation.
That was a big move.
We grew.
We were pushed out of LA — not our choice — to Gardena.
Not quite with only a suitcase, but close.
When we got to Gardena, we really did grow.
We had room.
My brother Varoujan (Vod) — joined us not long after.
2008 was hard.
My father got ill.
The economy collapsed.
We woke up in '09 and said, "Oh my."
I remember one Friday not knowing if I could make payroll.
But it seems we have.
Vod and I are the second generation.
We're working on the third.
We may fail.
But a third generation of Alajians at ARTO is a noble goal.
When I think about the future I tell people there are two time frames I hold at once:
Paying the bills on Friday AND a hundred years from now.
Here's to at least one more Friday

Happy St. Patrick’s Day ☘️!!!
We recently created this custom themed (with much symbolism) glass mosaic backsplash for a new television show - Let me know when you see it !!!
So excited- still get a thrill when people ask if we made the Kardashian/Jenner backsplash- the magic of television.
Anyone else notice that Hollywood is taking over NYC ? My whole Brooklyn neighborhood is becoming studio space !!! So #MadeInBrooklyn - right next to #Hollywood

Can you build a brick home and meet CA energy requirements?

I like the look of this home. Rather idyllic I would say.
