"I'm happy to say I feel better about the second half of my life than the first. My advice: Don't beat yourself up over past mistakes – learn at least a little from them and move on. It is never too late to improve ... it's never too late to change." – From Buffett's final annual letter I started following Buffett when I was just a teenager. I learned a lot about investing, but even more so about life. It's never too late to change.

The problem with WHOOP that nobody is fixing: It's called cadence lock. The wrist sensor picks up your arm swing rhythm instead of your actual heart rate while running. The result? My Garmin reads 124 bpm avg on an easy run. WHOOP reads zone 4 and 5 for nearly 80% of the same run. Same activity. Completely different data. And this happens every single day. What makes it worse? WHOOP doesn't let you use an external heart rate monitor to correct it. You're stuck with the bad reading. Your strain is wrong. Your recovery recommendations are based on a workout you didn't actually do. I've been a member for 3+ years. I've tried every fix. Nothing works. At what point does a "known issue" become a broken product? What am I paying for at this point @WHOOP?

@thesamparr It's kind of like electric dirt bikes - super cool, but there's just something to be said for the sound of a 2-stroke (and banging weights)

These new Puma HYROX shoes are very comfortable. Probably the most comfortable performance running shoe I’ve worn yet. Haven’t ran in them yet, only strength training and erg work, but really like fit and feel so far.

My Zwift setup is a direct reflection of who I am as a person right now. Diet Coke. Cadence. A fan pointed at my face. Towels covering every surface. TV for sanity. Peak performance environment.

Back in high school, there were a bunch of those “sneaker kids.” I didn’t get it. Now that I’ve become a runner, I kind of get it.

You just beat your rival in overtime for the first time in 15 years to cap off a 31-0 season. The only proper way to celebrate is to immediately mother fuck the student section.

No, and this is why lactate testing can be so beneficial if you really want to figure out your zones. AeT is a metabolic state, not a universal HR number or pace or power, and your body reaches that state at different heart rates depending on the modality. Running usually drives HR higher than biking or rowing, so you can get similar aerobic adaptations at a lower HR. The adaptations you're looking for with Zone 1/2 "easy" training are things like mitochondrial adaptations, improved fat oxidation, better lactate clearance and reuse, and stronger overall aerobic efficiency. Those depend more on the metabolic stress you're creating, which blood lactate is a better marker for, than on hitting a specific heart rate range.
Robert Leonard@therobertleonar

Hm. I’m confused by this. If my AeT is 146, don’t I need my HR just below that, say 135-145 (zone 2), to get the Z2 adaptations, regardless of the modality? Doesn’t it not matter if it’s running, biking, ski, row, elliptical, etc., anything that’s steady state, as long as the HR is just below AeT?

If you’re looking to add biking to improve your aerobic capacity, you need to understand this: Your biking max HR is likely 10-15 bpm lower than running, which means your training zones are completely different. Here are mine after almost two years of training both:

Been at ESPN a long time - this one was an all timer. Before social media, it was as viral as a story can be. I watched it on a tape in the news room. I couldn’t stop watching his teammates.

19 years ago, a high school basketball coach put his team manager into a game for the final four minutes. The kid had never played a single minute of competitive basketball in his life. He scored 20 points. Jason McElwain was diagnosed with severe autism at age two. He didn’t speak until he was five. He couldn’t chew solid food until he was six. He wore a nappy for most of his early childhood. As a baby, he was rigid, wouldn’t make eye contact, and hid in corners away from other children. He tried out for his school basketball team every year and got cut every time. Too small. Too slight. Barely 5’6 and about 54 kilograms. But he loved the game so much that his mum called the school and asked if there was any way he could be involved. The coach created a team manager role for him. For three years, McElwain showed up to every practice and every game. He wore a shirt and tie on match days. He ran drills, handed out water, kept stats, and cheered every basket like he’d scored it himself. On 15 February 2006, the last home game of his final school year, the coach let him suit up in a proper jersey and sit on the bench. With four minutes left and a comfortable lead, the coach sent him in. His first shot missed. His second missed. Then something shifted. He hit a three-pointer. Then another. Then another. His teammates stopped shooting entirely and just kept passing him the ball. He hit six three-pointers and a two-pointer. 20 points in four minutes. The highest scorer in the game. When the final buzzer went, the entire crowd rushed the court and lifted him onto their shoulders. His mum tapped the coach on the shoulder, in tears. “This is the nicest gift you could have ever given my son.” McElwain won the ESPY Award for Best Moment in Sports that year, beating out some of the biggest names in professional sport. He’s 36 now. He works at a local supermarket, coaches basketball, has run 17 marathons including five Boston Marathons, and travels the country speaking about never giving up. When asked about that night, his coach still gets emotional. “For him to come in and seize the moment like he did was certainly more than I ever expected. I was an emotional wreck.”

Creatine doesn't "work" if you don't also strength train. A new meta-analysis found that creatine supplementation led to significant gains in fat-free mass (+3.39 kg) and lean body mass (+2.70 kg), but ONLY when combined with resistance training. Without training, no effects.
