13.05.1985: WHEN THE US BOMBED A BLACK NEIGHBORHOOD 41 years ago yesterday, the United States dropped a bomb on a Black neighbourhood in Western Philadelphia in an effort to crush the Black Power organisation MOVE. The organisation was committed to the preservation of life on Earth, whether humans, plants, or animals. Eleven people were killed in the bombing, including five children. This history raises questions about the position and place of Black people within US society. Pan-African revolutionary Malcolm X once stated, "We are African, and we happen to be in America. We're not American. We are people who were formerly Africans who were kidnapped and brought to America... We were brought here against our will. We were not brought here to be made citizens. We were not brought here to enjoy the uh constitutional gifts that they speak so beautifully about today." While the members of MOVE were US citizens in a legal sense, the Philadelphia police department dealt with them in a way that mirrors how the US military deals with colonised imperial subjects around the world. This places 'Black' or 'African' communities in the United States (as Malcolm X phrased it) in a unique position. While physically located within the belly of the beast and the heart of the empire, they have a history of aligning with the liberation struggles emerging from the Global South.
