Unfortunately, this means that from Wednesday you should NEVER buy a walk-up ticket (Anytime, Off-Peak, Super Off-Peak) in advance. ALWAYS wait & buy on the day, as if you wake up on the day & find your plans have changed, event called off, whatever, you’ve lost all your money.
Simon Calder@SimonCalder

Rail ticket fraud. At last, a gaping loophole in the system will close, from Wednesday 1 April. Currently unscrupulous passengers buy an Anytime or Off-peak ticket, make the journey, and if the ticket isn't clipped or scanned they claim a refund, less £5. independent.co.uk/travel/news-an…

@TraderCobb The fine is deserved but 2115 is outright theft. You'd probably be able to find cases of migrants in the last couple of years commit vehicular manslaughter and receive a lesser fine. Pre Covid that would have been 300 bucks.

I just got a fine in the post because my teenage daughter had the seatbelt under her arm. $2115 It's not a fine that she wasn't wearing her seatbelt, it's that she didn't wear it right. Just a camera sitting there to watch our every move and raise revenue for the government. It was probably during the time we were singing John Farnhams "2 strong hearts". We love that song, we sing it loud and proud, until the part about the river to the wet large section of water that connects continents. We would never sing that part government, because that's banned too. $2115 for this. Honestl7 #AustralianOil #auspol

@ThemeParkLore I really wish LL would be changed to a real add-on, in limited numbers. Give me $199 a day for unlimited LL.

I wish Disney leadership would step in guests’ shoes. The people who’ve known, loved, and been in these parks for years know how badly things are broken. We’ve really abandoned guest satisfaction and show as key performance indicators, haven’t we?

@rose_phil @SimonCalder I guess that’s a change for the worse then, fair enough. You would probably need to buy a through ticket, or wait to buy the second ticket on your phone until you knew you were making the connection.

@rose_phil @SimonCalder If your train is delayed and you choose not to travel, you can still claim a refund. Nothing changes there.

@SimonCalder So I buy my fully flexible ticket in advance and find on the day that my connecting train is late which makes my journey no longer tenable. Through no fault of my own I can’t claim a refund because an estimated but unknown number of people travel fraudulently and no one can check

@AndyRoden1 @SimonCalder Maybe better to make the refund unavailable after the dated day of travel on the outward portion or single, rather than the ~1 month now. If you woke up indisposed or an event had been cancelled, you would have the rest of the day to claim. Likely wouldn't catch all such fraud.

@ianonabeach @SimonCalder I’d be delighted if trains were only late once or twice a year. I commute twice a week and the train is more than 15 minutes late at least half the time. The only thing stopping me claiming is apathy.

@jerryalderson @seatsixtyone @stephenbarker I don’t think you will. 99% of people buying in advance are buying advance tickets, which don’t change, and of the remaining 1% very few of them will change plans on the day of travel.

@seatsixtyone @stephenbarker A downside of this change is that you will get longer queues at TVM/TOs when most people travel. Any sensible industry tries to smooth sales. Bear in mind that you can buy a week in advance and cancel the previous but few would make a trip to a station just to cancel a ticket.

@thomasjralph @PowellNick70794 @seatsixtyone My thought is that any ticket shouldn’t be refundable after departure time. You can claim a refund if you know you’re not going to travel. But if you can’t be bothered to do that or, you get an unchecked ride(which this is all about) you can’t claim a refund after the travel time

DON'T BUY TRAIN TICKETS IN ADVANCE! On 1 April, govt is quietly changing the National Rail Conditions of Travel. Off-Peak & Anytime tickets become non-refundable after 23:59 the day BEFORE you travel. If you wake up & find your event cancelled, NO REFUNDS, even on £100+ tickets.

In a bid to clamp down on ticket fraud that costs the railways millions each year, the government has quietly changed the rules on claiming refunds for unused train tickets. ianvisits.co.uk/articles/fare-…

@monojohnny @seatsixtyone @GarethDennis The main reason for the change is rampant fraud by passengers purchasing e-tickets, travelling, then if the ticket isn’t scanned en route claiming they didn’t travel and requesting a refund.

@AskThePatrick @seatsixtyone No. Section 75 gives you the right to claim from your card provider for anything you could claim from the merchant. It’s not a magic wand that gives refunds any time for any reason.

@PowellNick70794 @seatsixtyone Where your train is cancelled or badly delayed, tickets will still be refundable as they are now. The change relates only to change-of-mind refunds, which were being abused by passengers getting e-tickets, travelling, and refunding them if they weren’t scanned.

@seatsixtyone what happens if you have a ticket that's (on the face of it) non-refundable then on the day the system goes into total meltdown due to fatality/cable theft/OLE damage/etc and you are unable to travel? same 100% loss even though it's not your fault?
