If anyone has any work opportunities please do get in touch. I have been out of work since August so my finances are now becoming quite depleted and I am really stressed out.

Essay I wrote for the Ideas Letter, a magazine published by @OpenSociety. Rather than a coherent ideological project illiberalism is a broad church bringing together old-school authoritarians & populist insurgents. Its bit at hegemonic order is bound to fail.

@ekuyda I feel that you've been a little disingenuous here. The author is clearly using this as a prop towards the end of the article to make us reflect on AI and the future.

we've reached peak journalism: Vanity Fair wanted to write a feature story about Dario but never got an interview so just asked Claude to make it up

sycophancy is the twisting of an important ai virtue that should not be thrown out with the bathwater: ai systems should make the user more like themselves rather than more like the ai. a new part of their cortical stack, with a minimal set of guardrails

The great @LovedayM traveled to Kurdish militant camps on the Iran-Iraq border to investigate whether fighters crossed into Iran or were involved in covert ops with Israel / the US. The definitive account of what happened, & what didn’t. @newlinesmag now newlinesmag.com/reportage/iran…

@sckimbriel @tszzl Did you read the recent vanity fair piece about AI and its role? It struck me that despite onboarding philosophers little thought has gone into what is 'good' and 'bad'.

@tszzl this is where i think this is just metaphysics again. We want entities—people, ai—oriented toward an actual habit that's *good*...but disputing what that is is the entire history of thought

@joce_leigh nice photos. I'm almost certain that I have broken the 1,000 threshold but just never really bothered counting. My shelves remain significantly disorganised across two different houses...

I photographed some of my bookshelves recently. I am in the 3% that have over 1000 and yes, the more I have, the more disorganized it has gotten! I know where they all are though! I also got rid of so many classics after my degree thinking the library has them but now they don’t! @BookwormBean -moving discussion and deleting on the voting thread

@OliverJia1014 Thanks Oliver :) Yeah, writing a journal article and a monograph (writing mine was its own special form of hell) is a very different experience from journalistic writing :) Each has its own place and journalism at least gets more eyeballs!

@thoughtgenerate Thank you, I enjoy your Substack as well. But yes, there is a huge difference and I've realized I'm not cut out for academic writing. Journalistic writing unfortunately isn't very viable for a career these days either, but I'll continue to write freelance columns.

In my first essay for @newlinesmag, I argue Tehran helped the Assad regime violently crush protests starting in 2011—then used those tactics on Iranians in January. If the IRI survives the war, it'll unleash a level of repression not seen before.newlinesmag.com/argument/what-…

I have to say I strongly disagree with analysis that implies that Iran was on a path to eventual normalisation with the West and that these decapitations have pushed them into a further hardline position. That’s cope. War or not, Iran’s regime only had one path regardless.
