@AlexiLalas @ussoccerfndn @AmericaSCORES @AYSO_Soccer Save your $100. But some pop up goals and start a local regular pick up soccer game. US soccer federation spends nearly 100 million a year on staffing. Don’t feed the beast. Feed the game with local pick up soccer.

@Glh4vu Huh? What are you even talking about. Lalas states that soccer is a business in the states, which is mostly is. You two bozos say “be like Europe”, which clearly wouldn’t work for so many reasons. Publicly funded soccer… got it 👍

@Glh4vu How so? No one has yet been able to answer his question of how should we provide a free development experience to players in this country.

@ti48043 @charliebayer8 @AlexiLalas If your kid is good enough, take him to an MLS club. IF they think he could be a pro one day and want his rights, he will play for free his entire youth career. If he drops off, he is cut. But if performs, you won't pay.

@Glh4vu OK genius, how many pro clubs are there in the states? Compare that per capita to these glorious European countries that are nothing similar the United States. If you live outside of the range of a pro club then I guess you’re SOL. MLS academies are funded. Isn’t hard.

@AllAboutME_Show @AlexiLalas Maybe? No idea about that market. But the market sets the price people are willing to pay, which is a whole separate discussion. Coaches don’t set the club fees. Clubs often set fees relative to their market. Maybe parents should start being held accountable for paying.

@ti48043 @AlexiLalas If you truly love to cook and you’re good at it, would you charge the parents of kids $5,000/year for cooking classes? There’s a middle ground to everything, but youth sports current position revolves around maximizing profit for all parties involved. Focus on development.

Why shouldn’t a youth soccer coach want and deserve to make as much money as possible? If someone is really good at their job they should maximize their value.
Jim@JimJim50863703

@AlexiLalas Yes, the point of coaching youth soccer should not be for a coach to make as much money as possible. If you want to make money coaching soccer, coach at higher levels and not youths.

@seanilling You think the government is responsible for subsidizing every sport and activity my kids might want to do? Really? I never thought I would see actual humans this delusional.

The fact that we just spent maybe close to $200 billion on an utterly stupid and pointless war and a certain species of American still finds the idea of the govt subsidizing youth soccer unthinkable is basically the insoluble problem here
Alexi Lalas@AlexiLalas

So you think the American taxpayer should fund youth soccer? You should definitely run for office on that. What about piano lessons, SAT prep, dance, math tutoring, horse riding, fencing etc? Should taxpayer fund those? Also, our goverment financially supports many sports.

@charliebayer8 @ScottGreen27202 @AlexiLalas Since when did playing for a club become a requirement? The American people are obsessed with chasing status. U9 Elite teams should not exist, but they do because guess what? People are willing to pay a premium.

@USMNTTruth Feel free to start coaching for free! See how many kids show up. Our soccer culture has zero passion here in the States. Simple as that. Kids would rather get a fancy badge on their sleeve and pic on social media rather than train to become the best.

@Mrclean__Jr @AlexiLalas Agreed. But there are too many outs here in the states. Kids can give up and go get a job, or plan for college. Passions get directed to other things too easily. Soccer isn’t a cultural expectation here. I wish it grew to that!

@AlexiLalas Lowering barriers of entry, you have 15,16 year olds leaving home to train for a chance to put food on the table for their families. That type of literal hunger cant be taught, but with the proper structure and support the MLS academies can scout and develop players here too

@Mrclean__Jr @AlexiLalas ODP was the closest it got to at least some sense of vertical integration, way back when. State - Regional - National. Now, it’s a shit show.

@AlexiLalas Fuck this is why we suck and continue to suck 😭😭😭 when something isnt working its time to pivot. It hasnt worked for +30 years plus now maybe its a sign itll never work. ODP was thrash, IMG was thrash our only hope is MLS academies and these would benefit so much more from

@AlexiLalas In Europe coaching is done by volunteers at under age level. You pay to use pitches etc, but coaches do it for the love of the game. Fees are generally about $400 in Ireland annually.

@cdwetzel1 @AlexiLalas Right. We have a soccer culture problem. Keeping up with the Jones is more important than the passion to play. If you offered a child the opportunity to play every day for free, or play for a “fancy club” that trains occasionally, they’re choosing the latter 9/10 times.

@AlexiLalas I volunteer for 6 years coaching club soccer in Arizona. Our whole club was volunteers and we have a starter in the MLS today Our biggest obstacle to being better was the players wanted to play on teams that cost more because they had fancier jackets and bags

@AlexiLalas People don't get it if soccer is too expensive why is USA hockey team so good ? It's 4X as expensive lots of kids don't get chances at higher level due to politics and network not being unable to afford it

@AllAboutME_Show @AlexiLalas Can’t you be motivated to do so, and also expect to earn from your expertise? That’s like saying someone who loves to cook, and good at it, should do so for free.

@AlexiLalas If you’re coaching youth soccer and your goal or motivation isn’t to do what’s best for the kids development, both individually and as a team, then you shouldn’t coach. Clearly, the current development of American youth soccer players is well below the top 10 countries.

@ig0rf @botthehigh @DPearsonPHL We don’t have as many clubs as you have in a larger country. We also don’t have the passion for soccer that Brazilians have. That’s a big missing piece.

@botthehigh @DPearsonPHL the clubs pay for it in the rest of the world. the problem (for your objectives) is your league system, actually. look at brazil and italia pyramids. that brazil map is only the 4 main divisions, without counting professional clubs that played only state leagues

Btw lalas supporting the current system is basically proof that it doesn’t work. Thierry Henry and Zlatan Ibrahimovic would never have had the money to pay for the American system. So we are stuck with players like Lalas and Pulisic as a result of this exclusion.
Alexi Lalas@AlexiLalas

Youth soccer (youth sports) is a competitive market with businesses selling a product that obviously customers are willing to pay for. I’d love if soccer was free to all. But who is going to pay for all this free soccer?

@AlexiLalas @talmonsmith Break up the MLS cartel and implement a real football pyramid where more clubs can compete, and invest in youth academies. Not just a closed shop franchise system that only serves to fatten owner pockets
