OFFICIAL Cabinet Readout - Tuesday 12 May. The Prime Minister chaired a meeting of his Cabinet this morning. The discussion focused on the contingency planning taking place to protect British people and businesses from the impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Ministers updated on the extensive plans in place across the economy, energy, health, business and transport sectors. The Prime Minister said that thanks to the government's responsible action to prepare for a range of scenarios, we stand ready to deal with the short and long-term consequences of the war. Ministers pointed to new support for those reliant on heating oil, action to protect carbon dioxide supplies and the energy price cap in place until July as examples of a government that will act to protect those who need it most during volatile times. They agreed that number one priority remains getting the Strait of Hormuz open again, so that international shipping can resume. Discussing the UK's leading diplomatic efforts, they looked ahead to today's meeting of Defence Ministers which will convene nations to discuss contributions for the defensive military mission in the Strait once conditions allow. Finally, they looked ahead to tomorrow's King's Speech and reiterated their ambition to build a stronger, fairer United Kingdom where families feel safer and better off. ENDS

@oldishbird1 The frightening thing is there is absolutely no one in the party that is competent enough to take on the job, that includes Starmer who has been disastrous.

The reactions to Starmer’s speech will be absolutely predictable. His opponents will rubbish it without even listening to it. His supporters will say it was a good speech, maybe also without even listening to it. Such is the state of our politics.
