I’m proud of our UK Armed Forces, who left these Russian vessels with no doubt. Their movements were not covert as Putin planned. Their attempted secret operations were exposed. And they have now retreated.
Ministry of Defence 🇬🇧@DefenceHQ

This satellite image is of Russian naval base Olenya in the High North, along with their spy ship Yantar and specialist GUGI submarines before they departed port for UK waters. These vessels are designed to survey underwater critical infrastructure during peacetime, then sabotage in conflict. In response to nefarious activity by Russian GUGI submarines and an Akula Class submarine, the Defence Secretary @JohnHealey_MP deployed our Armed Forces to track and deter any malign activity by these vessels. We worked in partnership with Norway and other allies responding to increased Russian activity in the Atlantic, north of the UK. A @RoyalNavy warship and @RoyalAirForce P-8 aircraft ensured the Russian submarines were monitored 24/7. The Akula Submarine subsequently retreated home having been closely tracked throughout and we continued to monitor the two GUGI submarines, in and around wider UK waters. Our Armed Forces left them with no doubt that they were being monitored, that their movements were not covert as Putin planned and that their attempted secret operations had been exposed.

🚨BREAKING: John Healey, UK Defense Secretary reveals a shocking plan by Russia to damage UK pipelines and delivers a serious WARNING to Putin: “Any attempt to damage them will not be tolerated and will have serious consequences.” Wow.

@afneil Dead cat story. It was reported a while ago that the Russians have been looking at subsea cables/utilities.

The is arse-covering nonsense. The idea we couldn’t send warships to the Mediterranean because they were busy shadowing Russian subs closer by, is ridiculous on so many levels. But let’s just settle for this — Type 45s don’t hunt subs.
Kate Ferguson@kateferguson4

John Healey says UK ships not rushed to Middle East as they were seeing off the Russian threat in UK waters. "When a crisis erupts noisily as it has in the Middle East I understand why there are calls to send assets there. "But the greatest threats are often unseen and silent."

@NickCohen4 How so? First no use of bases; then yes US can use bases; and then no they can't again? That's before we even consider the shambolic readiness of the Royal Navy.

@LukeEdwardsTele Nonsense, he has dithered and left British bases unprotected. That is before we get started on energy policy, Mandelson, U-turns and economic incompetence.

Keir Starmer is quietly turning into quite an impressive PM for an international global crisis. Calm, astute and strong when he needs to be. Not that he’ll get any praise for it in the media or on here of course, but he has shown real leadership in an extremely challenging situation.

Energy bills are falling today as a result of action we have taken on the cost of living. The route to energy security and lower bills for good is through clean, homegrown power that we control. My latest for the @DailyMirror👇 mirror.co.uk/money/we-conti…

Putin is rubbing his hands at the war in the Middle East because he thinks higher oil prices will let him line his pockets. I will always defend British interests at home and abroad, which is why we are taking action against Russia’s shadow fleet today.

@Keir_Starmer All they said was to use our air bases...which you are allowing now. Couldn't rush even if you wanted to with no functioning Navy and no air defences.

Moments like this tells you about leadership. The Tories and Reform would have rushed us into the conflict in the Middle East without thinking through the consequences it would have for British people. My Labour government will always make decisions in the national interest.

He wants to deploy UK forces we don’t have to keep oil and gas flowing 3,000 miles away but forbids any new investment in our sector of the North Sea. Bonkers.

@Rugby_Scoop Saw nothing in the two penalties at the end, certainly no more that had gone on before in the game. It got too big for the ref, it would for me in front of 80,000 baying french fans.

The referee tells England they have penalty advantage. Then he decides they don’t, but there is no way the England player knows he’s changed his mind as he kicks the ball. France go and score a try. It’s genuinely ridiculous. #FRAVENG
