I just called the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, His Beatitude Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, to express my great sorrow over this morning's unfortunate incident in the Old City of Jerusalem, in which Cardinal Pizzaballa and the Custos of the Holy Land, the Most Reverend Fr. Francesco Ielpo, were prevented from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre for prayers amid the ongoing security situation. I clarified that the incident stemmed from security concerns due to the continuous threat of missile attacks from the Iranian terror regime against the civilian population in Israel, following previous incidents in which Iranian missiles fell in the area of the Old City of Jerusalem in recent days. I reaffirmed the State of Israel's unwavering commitment to freedom of religion for all faiths and to upholding the status quo at the holy sites of Jerusalem.

The graphic presented was posted last night and you can clearly see that it has been edited. We post this unedited photo this morning of the terrorist Ali Shaib wearing Hezbollah uniform. Shaib had been cooperating with the Hezbollah terrorist organization since 2013 and was officially recruited as a member of Hezbollah’s military wing in 2020. His role was to film intelligence information and transfer it to the Radwan Force, all under the guise of a journalist. His activities in exposing the locations of IDF troops to Hezbollah posed a tangible threat to the lives of IDF troops in southern Lebanon.

💥It wasn't long ago that an Israeli army spokesman would have been summarily dismissed for posting falsified images to justify a targeted killing.

What happened to @JDiamond1 and his @CNN crew is intolerable. The IDF CoS Eyal Zamir needs to order those responsible detained and questioned immediately. What’s most troubling is that this didn’t come out of nowhere. Since October 7, we’ve seen a huge uptick in violence in the West Bank, by extremists often under the cover of soldiers like this one wearing “Messiah” tags on his uniform and helmet - a clear sign of the dangerous currents that have seeped into the ranks. These army tags are just one symptom. The bigger problem is that the government has given this trend cover - and the result has been a rise in Jewish terror, the topic of my column this weekend in the @Jerusalem_Post. jpost.com/opinion/articl…

I actually don't think anyone was behind the decision -- which is exactly the problem. Based on the reporting, it seems as though this was a decision made by police officers at the site, who were enforcing the safety directives in an undiscerning and ham-fisted manner. There *should* have been an instruction from their higher-ups to allow Cardinal Pizzaballa and his small entourage to enter the church and celebrate the mass in a safe and modest manner, as they had apparently expressed a willingness to do. That there doesn't seem to have been such an instruction, and that this decision was left to officers in the field, is a major unforced error and an embarrassing demonstration of stunning short-sightedness that is already causing tremendous damage. Additionally, any officers posted at or around holy sites of tremendous significance to billions of believers around the world should have the training and good judgement to navigate sensitive situations and know when to involve their superiors, as necessary. That that appears not to have happened here is yet another major failure that must be investigated and rectified.
