The Lord Lyon held a Head Court at the Court of Session yesterday during which Sheriff George Way of Plean was sworn in as Rothesay Herald.

@Greeningdon @LyonCourt The differenced Royal arms are Beauclerk, Dukes of St Albans, title created by Charles II for his son by Nell Gwynn. Peter (RIP) was a cousin of the current holder of the dukedom, his mother having being born a Beauclerk.

@LyonCourt Spotting a Royal pedigree in that coat of arms. Can you say what the connection is?

We hear with great sadness of the death of Peter de Vere Beauclerk-Dewar, umquhile Falkland Pursuivant Extraordinary. May he rest in peace.

@LyonCourt Very sorry to hear this sad news. I remember fondly attending some of the Heraldry Society of Scotland visits he led to places such as Mount Stuart and Drumlanrig in the late 70s. Charles was very knowledgeable and happy to share his learning. A charming man. RIP

We hear with great sadness of the death of Charles Burnett, an Officer of Arms for over forty years, most recently as Ross Herald. A man of enormous erudition, Charles was a great apostle of heraldry. We send our deepest condolences to his family. May his dear soul rest in peace

An American family of McEwens visiting Scotland for the first time kindly invited me to a dinner tonight in Inverness to talk about Scotland’s history, the past and present Clan system and heraldry - 3 hours of great fun, discussion and questions…and I left with a nice gift!

@LyonCourt My saint is St Cuthbert born in what is now Scotland and died in what is now England both constituent parts of a United Kingdom today. St Columba was expelled from Ireland after the Battle of Sligo. He helped Pictland to become a colony of Irish Dal Riata through conquest.
