Things I learned from posting my font video -Everyone has strong opinions about fonts -There is a widespread campy love of Papyrus -Helvetica respected but possibly overrated -Comic Sans antihero potential -Jury still out on mysterious figure Aptos, @microsoft’s new default

Something beautiful for the weekend! An extraordinary Acheulean handaxe knapped around a fossil shell circa 500,000-300,000 years ago. The maker appears to have deliberately flaked around the shell to preserve and place it in a central position. As a result this handaxe has been described as an early example of artistic thought. From West Tofts, Norfolk. 📷 Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Cambridge collections.maa.cam.ac.uk/objects/450987/

MAJOR UPDATE: All planetary boundaries are assessed, and six are crossed. For the first time ever, scientists have quantified all nine planetary boundaries. Six of them are already transgressed and we are increasing pressure on the others. Read more: buff.ly/45Ps1QG

A bowl from Predynastic Egypt, made from Nile clay around 5500-5700 years ago. A beautiful red colour, its shape makes it tips forward slightly, perhaps as if to offer something - and best of all, it is supported by 2 little human feet! #Archaeology

@GracchusBabeu11 @Joyhenderson78 It’s the grift—$61K for 2 hours of hate-filled preaching. None of these performers actually care about improving lives of the impoverished, just inciting controversy for protection money.

@Joyhenderson78 Anti-racism ideologies do nothing to change the material conditions of the working class, other than to spread greater inequality wherever they trod.

@atomlib @gossypiboma666 @nyxtelius The entire civilized world is united in suggesting you disciples of Putinist evil “get lost”. The audacity of the likes of you accusing a Lithuanian of “fascism” is risible.

@ChrisAvellone @Drake_TEKKEN @alejandroseidel Chris, thanks for Torment—a masterpiece. Two qs: was there a “Jason Edlin” associated with the Decanter of Endless Water? (Like Enoll Eva!) Had you or the Planescape setting designers read Zelazny’s Amber? Very different but features amnesiacs, archetypal city, reality-shaping

New study in @Nature out yesterday, showing that HLA-B*15:01 and HLA-DRB1*04:01 are associated with strong T cell responses against SARS-CoV-2 & asymptomaticity- guess what other phenotype HLA-DRB1*04:01 has been associated with? Unknown fulminant hepatitis in children.🧵

If there was ever a time I wanted people to retweet something - A vaccine specialist, Dr. Paul Offit, spells out how RFK Jr. played a role in discouraging vaccination rates in a small population. A measles outbreak followed which resulted in 83 deaths mostly of young children.

@DrewKarpyshyn Novel sounds fascinating (Tim Powers’ work came to mind), will look it up! Mass Effect=wonderful, paragon of world building! Q: timeline of human discovery of ME, relay & ancillary tech to wage FC war v. Turians seems optimistic! Design choice to retain recognizable society?

#HPC cluster admins: what’s the current thinking on enabling or disabling SMT/hyper threading? Some apps benefit from the virtual threads, others don’t. Some MPI distributions won’t consider logical threads and will only give you “per core” thread execution

Why Jan van Eyck is considered one of the greatest painters of medieval Europe: just look at this snapshot of the Ghent Altarpiece. The man was obsessed with details and we still love him for that.
