🚨 I was almost taken hostage in Cuba... I went to Cuba to document the humanitarian crisis and show life under 60+ years of communism and now amid the US blockade. Once I landed, they seized all my cameras except my iPhone and had intelligence agents following me all day until my security noticed their spies tailing us to the hotel where they waited all night for us to come down. Under communism there is no free speech, and those who show the reality or speak up are imprisoned. Me going without a planned Cuban government guide nearly got me and my security taken hostage or imprisoned. The situation in Cuba is much worse than anyone knows.

I've been to Cuba -Officials listening everywhere -you have to rent Internet daily/hourly -at the airport, you have to pay to use the toilet that doesn’t have a door on it -the employed women at the airport dressed in official uniform military looking shirts and skirts all wear **fishnets and high heels -The currency visitors use is not the currency residence use— theirs is worth 1/5. -they have built an enormous port for megaships too large to enter the ports of the USA. -a family gets the equivalent of two McDonald’s hamburgers worth of meat per month -they claim to have a vaccination for lung cancer -they have “the best health here in the world” because they don’t keep track of the people who die - propaganda from the Revolution is still everywhere and are the only books sold -they claim it’s very safe yet bars on many windows of homes -the government assigns you a job which could be sweeping sidewalks across town and if you don’t have a car, it’s your problem - if you break the law, your family members go missing -it’s true they are driving cars from the 50s. Houses/ buildings have not been repaired since the 50s. -the state owns most of the restaurants. The state controls the food and spices making it difficult for locals. -entire grocery stores will be filled with the handful of items that came in that month. Rows of the same item that may not come in again until next year. -I bought street Jewelry made from old cow bone beads and paid with what I thought was the regular currency and the woman told me it was a years salary, and she was crying tears of joy. I bought my group and made them all purchase from vendors. -everyone in Cuba makes $20 a month (really 1/5) but they sell products in the other currency. -only taxi drivers are allowed to be in possession of the other currency. Being a taxi driver is the most lucrative job in Cuba. -a doctor, I think you make $40 a month (this was the case in 2017) -there is a whole black market of trade happening -people mostly live on black beans, rice and plantains -they seem to love the US. - large statue of a man holding the little boy who was returned to Cuba after floating to US. The Man is holding boy in one arm and pointing toward Florida with the other. -it’s an interesting cultural experience. The buildings and architecture are stunning, but in TOTAL disrepair. -The people are lovely, but they stick very closely to the story they are allowed to tell. Best healthcare, free food, free education… but no freedom. -A lottery system if you want to leave only if you get chosen and make need to have a sponsor on the outside. -I went with the group and we were allowed to see the impressive port they were building for mega ships coming through the Panama Canal. Maybe it is backed by China they said the funding came from Brazil? The plan was Cuba in charge of reloading smaller container ships delivering to all US ports.

I bet somehow your bank account wasn’t shutdown when you entered the country like the activists who went there to provide aid. If you really were detained, it’s because you’re an intelligence asset and are only there to provide a counter narrative to the one being reported on the ground by activists there who actually care about the people of Cuba and are exposing the horrible conditions brought about by the US’s criminal and illegal sanctions.

Not only are you not safe in Cuba if you’re documenting their reality, but also many don’t realize that they have the ability to disregard your US Citizenship if your parents are Cuban-born. So they will in fact throw you in a Cuban prison and swallow the key and say you don’t exist.
