he was a high school player in the Prairie View Interscholastic League (PVIL) at Dunbar High School in Temple, Texas.
His cleats didn’t fit.
Practices were brutal.
Players took salt pills instead of water.
And when they played at white high school stadiums, they often couldn’t even use the locker rooms.
Segregated Texas football.
Years later, when asked if he was bitter about it, Joe Greene said:
“I thought it couldn’t get any better than that.”
The PVIL didn’t hold him back.
It helped build one of the greatest defensive players in football history.
