VIDEO: Researchers at Makerere University’s College of Natural Sciences are developing a fungicide to tackle aflatoxin contamination in maize, a challenge the country continues to grapple with.
Dr Patience Tugume, a senior lecturer and researcher in the Department of Plant Sciences, Microbiology and Biotechnology, said the innovation aims to help reduce aflatoxin levels in maize.
She revealed this during the opening of a science exhibition at Makerere University, running from March 5 to 7, 2026. 📹Jane Nafula

From Bushenyi to the world!
Last week, over 5,000 student leaders gathered at the 2nd Annual Peace Festival in Western Uganda, hosted at Bweranyangi Girls Secondary School.
We were proud to be part of this three-day journey, focused on nurturing compassionate, socially conscious young leaders. Alongside lessons in leadership and community cohesion, we helped prepare youth for the world of work through financial literacy and personal finance skilling.
We were represented by our colleagues through the Absa Employee Volunteer Program, led by Pamela Turyatunga, our Citizenship Manager and our Ag. Head of Markets, Catherine Kijjaggulwe, reflecting our commitment to walking the talk in empowering communities.
At Absa, we believe our success is deeply connected to the success of the communities we serve. That’s why we invest in initiatives that make a real difference—empowering Africa’s youth with skills for life and work.

AI real came for us. Why would someone use AI to depict poor roads in Western Uganda? Ignore this propaganda by Daily Monitor, the gains we are protecting are way better than what these AI videos are showing.
