Stuff with admin tasks, low leverage work, etc. The type of stuff every other company wants to eliminate. And according to them it worked, their new AI system handled 90% of the grunt work and delivered billions in productivity. But here’s the part no one is talking about. After the cuts, IBM’s total headcount went up. Why? Because the work didn’t disappear. It shifted from automating low level tasks and freed up budget & bandwidth to hire in high priority areas where humans are still mandatory. This is something to keep an eye on. IBM is providing one type of blueprint. Companies will cut aggressively where AI can replace the work, then backfill with people who can drive growth and operate at a higher level. If you're reading this, the question you should ask yourself isn’t “Will AI take my job?” It’s “Is the work I do considered low value or high value?”
