The EU’s Methane Regulation risks triggering another energy crisis. To avoid it, Brussels needs a regulatory environment that encourages, not discourages, suppliers. Europe cannot regulate its way to energy security. Half measures and "flexibilities" won't cut it. The EU must fix the regulation's core defects or risk driving away its most dependable suppliers — decreasing energy supplies while increasing energy costs. Last Friday, I held good talks with European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security @MarosSefcovic. During our discussions, we addressed the new U.S.-EU Action Plan for Critical Minerals, as well as progress made on the 2025 EU-U.S. Joint Statement, including significant EU investments in American autos, pharmaceuticals, and energy. We also addressed shared priorities in regard to economic security, investment screening, and addressing risks from overcapacity production. I emphasized the need to address Iran’s threat to the Strait of Hormuz and noted the U.S. @g20org Presidency’s focus on efforts to keep food and fertilizer supply chains well-functioning.

The United States and European Union stand united in firmly rejecting political violence in all its forms. Thank you Presidents @vonderleyen, @eucopresident, and @EP_President, and HRVP @kajakallas for your messages of support for @POTUS and @FLOTUS.

🇺🇸🇪🇺 The buying power and the economic productivity power of the combination of the United States and the European Union is extraordinary. We are, combined, the largest customers and users in the world and have to ensure that these supplies and these minerals are available for our countries in ways that are not monopolized in one place or concentrated in one place.

The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding for the U.S.-EU Strategic Partnership on Critical Minerals shows the growing awareness and commitment throughout the world, particularly with our allies in the West and in Europe, the importance of supply chains in critical minerals to the success of our economies, and to our national security.

A deal is a deal. In August 2025, the EU Commission recognized that the U.S. poses negligible risk to global deforestation. Today I met with Commissioner @JessikaRoswall to urge the EU to act on that reality. The Commission's simplification review of the EU’s Deforestation Regulation, which ends April 30, should deliver real results, reducing regulatory compliance costs and costs for European consumers — not increasing bureaucracy. U.S. producers don't contribute to deforestation and shouldn't face costly geolocation requirements that increase the costs of their products with no environmental benefits. We are hopeful that the EU will address the very serious and legitimate concerns of U.S. producers and exporters.

Met with EU Trade Commissioner @MarosSefcovic to discuss how to deepen U.S.-EU economic ties and sign an important MOU on Critical Minerals. The U.S. and EU share the world’s largest trade and investment relationship, and these actions only strengthen it.

Europe can only re-industrialize and generate the energy needed to participate in the AI economy with a policy prioritizing energy abundance — that is, a broader policy of “energy addition” rather than “energy transition.” Europe has focused too much on subtracting needed, reliable energy supplies that provide the foundation for our modern society.  It needs more fossil fuels — full stop.  Natural gas and coal provide the reliable and dispatchable power necessary when the sun doesn’t shine and the wind doesn’t blow. A significant new amount of nuclear power for baseload electricity is also critical.  The AI economic revolution is moving at warp speed and will wait for no one. To participate in the burgeoning AI economy, be prosperous, and do what's in the best economic interest of European citizens, Europe needs reliable energy now — a modern economy cannot rely on weather dependent energy to thrive.
