@strxwmxn You don’t support this weird law, though… right?

@NYC_essentialSW But it applies equally to all who commit heinous crimes. This law was written so it would not apply to Israeli murderers.

The law was pushed by Ben-Gvir, Netanyahu's hardline Minister of National Security. In pracrice, it will apply to Palestinians, not Israelis who commit murder. Israel is losing friends by the day. You can explain why this law is totally justified, and then watch the pro-Israel poll numbers in the USA keep slipping. "Under the new law, Israeli civilian courts — which try both Israeli Jewish and Arab citizens — can apply the death penalty only for homicides intended to “negate the existence of the State of Israel.” Given that, it would effectively be impossible to execute Jewish extremists like Baruch Goldstein, an Israeli settler who gunned down 29 Palestinians at a West Bank holy site in 1994, said Yoav Sapir, a former head of Israel’s public defenders office." "Israel’s national doctors’ union has refused to carry out lethal injections, so those convicted will face death by hanging. Some rigpracticeht-wing Israeli lawmakers enthusiastically adopted the noose as a symbol of their support for the law, wearing golden noose-shaped pins on their lapels in the Knesset."

@HistoryBoomer Amazing how much interest there is one little country’s death penalty law (which applies only to a small subset of murders!). I’d be curious as to how much ink you’ve spilled over Egypt or Saudi Arabia’s death penalty laws. The obsession is a sickness.

@HistoryBoomer This is why ethnostates are in conflict with democratic principles, no matter how many other freedoms and rights they selectively grant to ‘others’.

The US bombed a primary school in Iran, killing 168 girls. Why is nobody talking about this anymore? These abominable war crimes should not be forgotten — and nor should the lives, hopes and dreams of human beings who were slaughtered with impunity.

@HistoryBoomer They are despicable. But they aren't the only or even primary voices in the government. What they do that's particularly bad is make it impossible for Israel to restrain the fanatical settler violence. They don't set policy in Gaza.

Israel is the only country in the world that is preemptively judged on actions it didn't take because of an op-ed written in a newspaper by someone no one has heard of.
Carl@HistoryBoomer

This is an OpEd in an Israeli paper recommending forcibly removing the entire Palestinian population from the Gaza Strip. That would be ethnic cleansing, a crime against humanity. If they want to lose the support of most Americans, this is the way to do it.

Great message from @IsraelPresident @Isaac_Herzog abt violence in Judea/Samaria. Attributed to "settlers" but these criminal acts are NOT by settlers. They're UNSETTLERS. I know many settlers-good, decent ppl. Those who steal, vandalize, & injure others are terrorists.

It's hard to know what Israel's long term strategy is other than constantly working to keep its neighbours in a state of chaos, immiseration and authoritarianism.

@havivrettiggur This could also be said by an Iranian dad who’s kids are in shelters. But Gur would defend Iranian kids dying in bombing reads because of unproven theories about Iran’s plan to nuke Israel. There’s just no end to this shit.

Perfectly said. My kids just spent a month in shelters so they won't have to spend years of their lives afraid of far worse. Our generation's task is to get this job done. It's a test of resolve. If you have the resolve, you change the course of history.

I was in a synagogue last night in the center of Israel. As the prayer service continued, a tall handsome young man stood in front of the Torah Ark, his faced pressed against the velvet curtain, for what seemed like half an hour. When he finished, I asked why the long and fervent prayer. He said he was leaving that night to fight in Lebanon in order to defend his nation against Hezbollah, and he was praying for the success of his mission. As he left, the entire congregation stood and clapped and wished him well. To those outside of Israel praying for the Jewish State, try to imagine what life is like here. The daily dash to a shelter with small children or an elderly relative, the knowledge that a beloved son, daughter, spouse or patent is defending the nation and in harm’s way, and the well publicized threats from enemies to destroy us all. If you’re not here, you won’t directly experience these traumas. But try to imagine them nonetheless as you pray and let your feelings drive you to seek God’s mercy with even greater intensity. It is an important contribution that can be made from anywhere on earth.
