These taboos were also shattered by progressives who sought to make any perspective that conflicted with their perspectives "racist" or "white supremacy." People really don't like walking on eggshells. That sparked an inevitable backlash and now the guardrails on our discourse are mostly gone.

Put another way: if the war goes south, Trump will blame Israel - and even if whatever he says is not remotely antisemitic, virulent antisemitism will ensue *because of the taboos against hateful rhetoric he shattered in 2016*.

Trump shattered taboos against racism and misogyny that had accrued post WWII when he was explicitly racist and misogynist - and won. To the degree he was antisemitic then it was insinuative - but Jews were never going to be siloed once those taboos could be handily shelved 1/2

🚨 BREAKING 🚨 Fox News has obtained a photo of Michigan synagogue attacker Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, which he sent to his sister in Lebanon on the day of the incident. Fox reports that the rifle visible in the image is the same weapon used during the attack. The Arabic text in the photo referenced martyrdom and vengeance and has been redacted to avoid amplifying the message.

There's no break in MAGA. Trump's approval with MAGA GOP is literally 100%. 90% of MAGA GOP approve of US military action in Iran. Those who disapprove of Trump are not MAGA at this point. Importantly: MAGA makes up the same share of voters as it did when Trump won in 2024.

Here's what Columbia PhD students say about Jews and Israelis behind closed doors.🧵Since 10/7, grad students in the union have:
- Convinced @Columbia's anthropology dept. to NOT discipline instructors for discrimination if it's Palestine-related (#10 below)
- Said Persian Jews were "one of the most fascist" demographics in America (#17)
- Shot down a resolution to condemn "anti-Israeli hatred" and national origin discrimination because "I don't want to normalize Israel as a 'nation state' " (#12)
- Complained about "Zionist arbitrators" inside Columbia's anti-discrimination office during workplace retaliation cases (#11)
- Openly discussed going "on the offensive" inside classrooms and doing "teach-ins in our classes" on Palestine (#10)
- Said they were "very tempted" to try to claim a piece of Columbia's $21 million antisemitism settlement fund, even though this student was not Jewish (#16)
These PhD students have current or past research and teaching positions at Columbia, including with undergrads. Book Review: Woke Antisemitism by @DavidLBernstein
My reading usually sticks to two main topics, Israel and the American presidency. This book addressed neither of those topics, but the title grabbed me and I was interested to learn about the interface between American woke culture and antisemitism. Both seemed to become more popular at the same time and I wondered if there was a theory that would connect the two via causation. Bernstein makes the argument that woke culture and antisemitism are directly linked.
From the publisher: Woke Antisemitism is a firsthand account from a top Jewish leader about how woke ideology shuts down discourse, corrupts Jewish values, and spawns a virulent new strain of antisemitism.
In May 2021, amid another conflict with Iran-backed Hamas, Israel took a beating in both the mainstream press and social media. Notwithstanding the rocket fire aimed at its citizens, the Jewish state was portrayed as the oppressor and the Hamas government in Gaza as the oppressed.
While Israel has always been subject to excessive scrutiny, this time was different. What had changed in the ideological environment? A veteran leader of Jewish advocacy organizations and a self-described liberal who has broken with the far left over the adoption of woke ideology, David L. Bernstein traces the growth of woke ideology in his life and career from a remote academic study to an international post-colonialist movement, then a faddish campus ideology, morphing into corporate diversity programs to a dominant ideology in mainstream institutions, including many Jewish organizations. Bernstein shows how core ideological tenets—such as privilege, equity, whiteness, and the oppressor/oppressed binary—can be and are weaponized against Jews.
What’s more, surveys tell us that Americans are self-censoring at record rates. Jewish institutions, long known for their robust deliberative processes and open discourse, have not been spared. Many have uncharacteristically dodged controversial issues and have simply fallen in line. Even when Bret appeared to be less nuts five years ago, there was something conspiratorial about his analysis. He was convinced Bernie Sanders' loss to Biden was some evil conspiracy and clearly didn't understand the political system and role of party leaders. The conspiratorial mind is usually deeply ignorant of how things actually work and fills in the blanks. But these latest projections are truly unhinged.

I can’t express how true this is.
I had typical Christian beliefs about Israel prior to 10-7.
I believed it was prophetically significant & was glad there was a democracy in the M.E. but didn’t think much else about it.
I didn’t know many Jews except for some older couples and my husband’s college best friend.
And then I spoke out about the 10-7 massacre.
And it was like Hitler was reborn in my comment sections.
I started to get horrific and violent private messages, I was called Jewish slurs daily (as a Christian), and Nazi/Holocaust meme responses became the norm.
And it wasn’t just my comments – it was EVERYONE’S who mildly supported Israel.
I started to watch major influencers fall one by one as if they were bitten by zombies.
And then I was radicalized.
