@travisakers wait! the question is poorly worded and it's not clear what its even asking. but dot boards can be helpful: they help students see numbers as quantities (not just abstractions), understand arrays (rows × columns), and in general bring structure to mathematical thinking : )

I have a theory about this as someone who went through teacher education during this time period and also had one child out of six who was able to do this. There are one or two kids in almost every class who can learn to read via whole language, where they just look at a word and recognize it, essentially memorizing a word instantly. You don’t really have to teach them to read. They just pick it up and usually they are reading very early on, three or four years old. Somewhere along the line, somebody noticed that kids could do this and foolishly thought every child could learn to read this way when in fact the opposite is true. Probably 98% need explicit and direct instruction via phonics. I have noticed this trend in education; someone comes up with a new idea, and everyone jumps on board for enough years to mess up a generation of children, before they end up going back to the way things were originally done.
Boze Herrington, Library Owl 😴🧙‍♀️@SketchesbyBoze

In the early 2000s, schools foolishly replaced phonics instruction (which is very effective at teaching kids to read) with something called “whole-language learning” (which is not). This method encourages kids to “guess” a word based on the first letters. It has been a disaster.

I was gifted this book from one of my 5th graders the other day. I think reading Number the Stars and Hannah's Suitcase as a class earlier this year influenced this decision. Very thoughtful gift.

@Unseen_Archive @UMich I’d be just as appalled if it were a shout-out to pro-Israel students (which i realize would never happen by a prof) Your activism has no place in a commencement speech

Yesterday I had the pleasure of addressing the graduates @UMich commencement. I spoke about the long history of student activism, which has moved the University toward justice. Here is a video. It has caused a furore on social media & in UM admin. youtube.com/watch?v=iu0xsQ…

@TolentinoTeach thanks for noticing and pointing this out! our school has to grade for participation. honestly, I could do without some of what passes for "participation" so that my students could listen, process, absorb and retain in peace and quiet : )

Unpopular idea: Many school environments are not built for introverts. Yes, collaboration matters. Yes, school plays an important role in social development. But let’s be honest about the other side. The constant noise. The pressure to speak on demand. The overuse of group work. The lack of control over classroom volume and behavior. The absence of sustained silence. All of it works against the introverted student. Many of the “quiet” students aren’t disengaged. They’re out of their element.

These signs were placed in hyper-progressive Ann Arbor, MI. The same town where I attended college. While this is terrible, I am glad that at least these people are going full mask-off with their hatred instead of hiding behind "anti-zionism isn't antisemitism" and other lies.

@vesperlynd42 @OsheaJacksonJr Bruno Mars is a cosplay specialist. He's a decent singer but almost as unoriginal as Drake. Putting him in the same category with one of the most original performers of all time is wild af. Bruno has spent his ENTIRE life trying to be someone else. Bruno is nothing without others

This is the REAL Handmaiden’s Tale!⬇️ A woke white woman tells the young girls who lost medals in three events to a seventh grade boy—who identifies as a girl—to get used to being disappointed. She advises the girls to adopt a “growth mindset” and accept their losses to males. She says a girl who submits & meekly accepts defeat by a male is learning “resilience.” 🤡@clownworld

Thanks to all for calling this revolting language out. If he gave a shout-out to pro-Israel students (which would never happen), I’d object to that, too. Political activism has no place in an educational setting. And it starts way before college. I left a good paying job at a “elite” school because they wouldn’t or couldn’t acknowledge DEI paved the way for all of this. nypost.com/2024/12/14/us-…

This is beyond shameful. Derek Peterson should be fired immediately. Hate should not persist anywhere, but especially at one of the world’s most prestigious universities. Michigan has long been a popular destination for Jewish students. There is a thriving Hillel, Jewish fraternities and sororities, courses on religion. This asshole spit in the face of that proud history in this despicable display. I’m ashamed of my Alma Mater today. 😡
StopAntisemitism@StopAntisemites

At today’s University of Michigan graduation, Professor Derek Peterson thanked anti-Israel protesters for 2 years of campus chaos. Turning a commencement speech into a political rant like this is grounds for termination. Sickening.

This is a sad story. I feel for the woman described here. But no one is a victim of their own choices. Age and reflection bring us wisdom on our choices, mistakes, and what we might have done differently with the knowledge we have today. That’s life—hindsight is 20/20. I love motherhood and would 100% recommend having children to anyone. But embracing a victim narrative where women are alleged victims of their own choices (or feminism) does not help anyone.
Larissa Phillips@larissaphillip

I feel so disgusted with the generational vibe that told us that having kids wasn’t a priority and that being a mom was kind of a lesser path. Dealing right now with someone close to me who completely missed the life she should have had, which would have made her very happy— as a

The pattern is unmistakable and repulsive. If you keep calling Black leaders "low IQ," you aren't expressing a political disagreement. You are using a racist dog whistle to undermine their humanity. Every single time Donald Trump uses this slur, he shows the country that his politics are built entirely on grievance and bigotry. It’s a disgrace to the office and a stain on this country.
