#OnThisDay in 1890, a half-dozen white men assassinated F.M.B. “Marsh” Cook after he criticized the pending Constitutional Convention for its plot to “restore” white supremacy and strip Black Mississippians of the right to vote. He had announced that he would run as a white Republican candidate for that convention and had urged Black voters to unite against this evil plot when he was gunned down.
The Cleveland Gazette hoped his killing would cause the federal government to intervene, but that never happened. The convention continued, and no one was ever tried for his killing. The new constitution and new laws did exactly what Cook had claimed — removed Black Mississippians from voting rolls and then kept them from regaining the right to vote through poll taxes and constitutional tests.
Other Southern states soon followed Mississippi’s lead, plunging the South into a legacy of disenfranchisement and discrimination. The measures proved so successful in barring African Americans that when the Voting Rights Act passed in 1965, less than 7% of Black Mississippians were allowed to vote.

Politics used to be nerdy.. talk about economics and policies. Now it feels like a WWE event. A non- stop reality show where you don’t want to win against someone - you want them dead. It’s wild in the USA.
Okay I can’t figure out how to delete my past repost- I really only agree with the back half of that- watching Harris get absolutely battered in my local groups is so disheartening. Every single thing is sexist, racist.. unproven. It’s the worst.
I'm not a big fan of Harris at all and think she's a mediocre candidate, but everyone who said right-wingers wouldn't be able to help themselves and would immediately spew nonstop racism and misogyny if she was the nominee was totally proven right in like 15 minutes
@jimmystolte@SklarBrothers@Twins@AcmeComedyCo@NateAbshire Just as a witness- they did NOT forget 87… in fact they walked swiftly by a plaque about it under Target field - but they Twins were so kind, fun & wonderful- how can you not love them? Plus- it was a gorgeous day for baseball!
What a blast yesterday! Thank you to @Twins for letting us throw out the first pitch and fight their mascot. Thank you to @AcmeComedyCo for amazing sold out shows all weekend long with @NateAbshire and @wendymay. #purejoy
Thanks to everyone at @twins 4 incredible hospitality for me & my 10 year old -most impressed by the unlimited bubble gum and the heated seats in the dugout! It was a core memory for us both. And @SklarBrothers such talent and genuine enthusiasm for every fan. Thank you ❤️❤️
Ummm… if you are bored this weekend, you should go to Acme Comedy Club - my girl @wendymay is opening, and then another local favorite @NateAbshire.. and then apparently the headliner is amazing, too, per Wendy.
This old lady might have to stay up past her bedtime and go. 🤔🤔
@jujuboston@Dave_May is on Jeopardy! Tonight! And all your advice was spot on and perfect! It’s great TV and we thank you for your part in making it amazing! ❤️❤️
Dear @SouthwestAir, the pilot just announced there's a storm in Denver and we don't have enough fuel to circle. We're headed to Wichita instead. (Flight 2456). In situations like that, do we refuel in Wichita & continue, or do I need to book a different flight to Denver? Thanks!
@DeRushaJ@DanCookWCCO It was truly my pleasure. Hope I turned around that feeling that comics clam up on air. Y’all were so welcoming I have no idea what they were thinking. ;)
This is my friend Reggie Bibbs. Reggie is the kindest and most loving person I have ever met. His face is disfigured from a rare genetic condition called ‘Neurofibromatosis.’
After many years of never leaving his bedroom, out of shame and embarrassment, Reggie finally summoned enough courage to face his fears and raise awareness of this disorder.
He has incurred tremendous challenges over the past years, including the loss of his mother and the foreclosure of their family home. Despite these hardships, Reggie has maintained an extraordinary spirit and has always believed that something better was coming.
My humble request is for you to open your heart and consider supporting Reggie in raising funds through a GoFundMe account. These funds would be to cover his monthly rent, utilities, and essential expenses for the next five years.
Any contribution, no matter how small, will make such a meaningful difference in Reggie's life and help him reach his $133,000.00 goal.. Thank you so much.
